Blaming the goal for Ospina last night was criminal. I was surprised to see G.Neville criticise him. The only danger was coming from Gomis and we had Per, Koscielny, and Monreal to deal with him, so it was the defence's fault. Ospina had to first cover his near post when Montero had the ball, but our defence should have watched Gomis closer. However, the reason we lost the game was our finishing last night. Ospina is a good keeper, but we need competition in the area, so a WC keeper is needed in the summer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
While Ospina could not be faulted for our outfield defending, once Gomis made contact with the ball, it was a save he (or any other PL goalkeeper) would have made 9 time out of ten.
---------------------------------------------
No, because Ospina had to cover his near post before the cross, then try to cover grounds during the cross, but i have to give credit Gomis for targeting his other near post for the finish to have no chance to save it. Ospina did well, but could not prevent the goal.

"However when you look at title wining sides of the past (and present) they all have had a top/world class goalkeeper."
---------------------------------------------
Not true. Real Madrid conquered Europe with an average Casillas. For the past two seasons Joe Hart has been average, but City won the league. Dortmund dominated in Germany with a keeper hardly describable as world class. The list is endless. If you sort out all other departments you can win the title with a good keeper who is not necessarily world class, and Ospina is good enough. With better finishing we would have won very comfortably last night, that's why we lost.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are obviously expections to the rule, however in the main successful sides all have had top goalkeepers.
Consequently to brand Casillas and Hart as "average" goalkeepers is at best naïve.
"but i have to give credit Gomis for targeting his other near post for the finish to have no chance to save it. Ospina did well, but could not prevent the goal."
There's absolutely no way that header was un-saveable.

Had Ospina tracked the player (Gomis was the only Swansea player in a position to score) he would have been in a better position to make the save rather than needlessly moving to the front post.
It would have been impossible for Gomis to head the ball from the near post.

Time away must have softened me but I'm gonna go ahead and agree with Godfather for once. He just never does anything that you wouldn't expect of him and when the time does come for that to be the case, it's not so much that he underwhelms, just that you say don't really get any kind of overriding sense of safety.
I think it's about presence and in Ospina he just doesn't have that command that "it" factor that makes both fans and his teammates feel 100% safe having him behind them. What "it" is a bit intangible which does seem like a bit of a cop out, admittedly, but "it" is certainly something one can feel if you watch and play enough football.
It's a weird one, to be honest and I think it's why goalkeepers are judged fairly harshly as I do think charisma and a lot of intangible qualities play the part in the rating of goalkeepers and Ospina just doesn't seem to shine in that field despite being fundamentally sound.
"There's absolutely no way that header was un-saveable."
It wasn't "unsaveable". It would have needed a top save to stop it. Not making a top save to stop every attempt doesn't mean you aren't a top keeper. The same way Alexis missing a sitter doesn't mean we need a replacement.

Ospina drops the ball quite a lot or pushes it into dangerous areas, he hasn't made many mistakes so it's hard to criticise him but he doesn't look a natural like Szczesny. He's more reliable and consistent atm but def not a better keeper.

Casillas was in the top 3 keepers in the world at a young age. Why is so much history re-written on ja606?
There was a period where he was world class

The discussion is about when he won the CL last season. Nobody is re-writing history.

Ospina drops the ball quite a lot or pushes it into dangerous areas, he hasn't made many mistakes so it's hard to criticise him but he doesn't look a natural like Szczesny. He's more reliable and consistent atm but def not a better keeper.
