Miami v Mandems

Miami (4-3-3): Wellenreuther; Stones, N’Koulou, Koulibaly, Hector; Padoin, Pogba, Gomes; Santiago, Benteke (Icardi 80), Berahino

Mandems (4-2-3-1): Guaita; Clyne, Smalling, Dante, Maxwell; Carrick (Aranguiz 75), Schweinsteiger; Insigne, Eriksen (B Silva 75), D Silva; Suarez

MATCH REPORT

Miami went for a big and physical team as usual, looking to be direct and outmuscle the opposition. Mandems went for an attacking side and I thought they were clearly the better side on paper, though I still see weaknesses in that defence. This game was a real beauty v the beast affair; Mandems played all the football with Carrick and Schweini experts at retaining possession and tons of creativity and goal threat in the front four. Miami will always pose a threat on the break with the sheer power of that midfield and Benteke up top, though.

I thought both sides made tactical errors, though. The home side selected two big lumbering centre backs, which I thought was the wrong decision when up against a player as clever and elusive as Luis Suarez. On the flipside, Mandems used Schweini in a man-marking role against Pogba, which I thought was a very strange decision. Solid he may be, but man-marking isn’t Schweini’s game and I thought he’d comfortably lose that match-up, though he would be as excellent as every when in possession. That, coupled with a tactical switch that I liked from Fan, freed up Pogba to be more of an attacking threat, which I think suits him perfectly.

Further quibbles I had were the continued use of Stones as a RB – I think a good left winger will have him on toast – and Trebs’ use of Insigne as an orthodox winger; I don’t doubt that he’s capable of playing there but it’s a bit of a waste of his skillset not to let him cut in and go for goal.

Miami were on the back foot from the word go, and Carrick pinged a lovely ball into Suarez’s feet after 11 minutes; the Uruguayan laid it off for David Silva and received the return ball, easily slipping away from N’Koulou before rifling it across Wellenreuther and into the bottom corner. 0-1.

The lead didn’t last long though, and it was a simple goal to bring Miami level; Stones pinged it long for Benteke, he nodded it down for Berahino, who thumped it at goal. Guaita made a mess of the save and it dropped at Benteke’s feet for an easy tap-in. 1-1 with 27 minutes gone.

The away side were back in front shortly after half time, Insigne driving into the gap between Hector and Koulibaly to latch onto an Eriksen through ball after 51 minutes. He dinked it over the keeper and hit the far post, but again the predatory instincts of a top striker paid off as Suarez bundled in. 1-2.

Miami started to throw men forwards more and Paul Pogba started to exert himself. After 68 minutes he strode through midfield to meet a bouncing Santiago layoff and thumped it first time into the top corner. Unstoppable. 2-2.

Trebs made some changes and so did Fan, and it was the home side’s change that had the desired effect. The home side pressed and eventually forced a late corner on 87 minutes, which was swung over by Santiago. Paul Pogba was there with the header, saved by Guaita, but that man Mauro Icardi was on hand to poke home an Inzaghi-esque 3-yarder. 3-2 to Miami, which is how it finished. Very harsh on Trebs, but Miami rode their luck and look very good for the Div2 title.

FINAL SCORE: Miami 3-2 Mandems

Goals
Miami: Benteke (Berahino), Pogba (Santiago), Icardi (Pogba)
Mandems: Suarez (Silva), Suarez (Insigne)

Yellows
Miami:
Mandems:

MotM: Paul Pogba (Miami). The man in the middle outmuscled the opposition and proved the difference today with a goal and an assist.

One thing i will ask, i put Schweinsteiger on man marking pogba, do you feel i would have done better and got more slots had i told him to join carrick in shielding the back four? Because personally i felt pogba was the one person that would do anything, and i had to do something to stop him?

Or perhaps if i started fellaini over eriksen with the instruction of stopping pogba?
