Strange how Close Encounters..(which i've never seen) has only ten critics reviews on IMDB...they're all good - but very few in number

averages at 7.7

Jurassic Park : The Lost World (1997) Director : Steven Spielberg

Steven Spielberg one of the finest filmmakers of our time brings us his phoned in sequel to his previous box office and critical smash hit Jurassic Park with Jurassic Park : The Lost World.
Joining up Spielberg we have the reappearance of Jeff Goldblum as Dr Malcolm, the scientist who had more interest in style than genetically designed Dinosaurs (in the previous film ),as the films main ,continually perplexed , protagonist.

Alongside Goldblum is a array of respected actors, such as the minor returning figure of Richard Attenborough as John Hammond, who gets this whole kafuffle rolling, Julianne Moore as Dr Malcolm’s on/off love interest, the great Pete Postlethwaite as the story’s hardened respected game hunter who commands a motley crew of other fellow hunters ….oh and the bleary eyed tired face of Vince Vaughn.

Each character has their own various intentions once they settle on the shores of Site B, a top secret Island just off the coast of Costa Rica.
One of those intentions seems to be TO SHOUT AS MUCH AND AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE SO THEY DON’T DISTURB THE DINOSSAURS !
And another one of their intentions seems to be to contradict themselves constantly, none more so than Julianne Moores principle of ‘don’t interact with the dinosaurs’ only 5 minutes later to, you guessed it, interact with the Dinosaurs. By this time Dr Malcolm is leaning heavily towards swimming home. And he would have had it not be from the ‘surprise ! ‘ appearance from his gymnastic loser (hmm, failed gymnastic student eh ? Wonder if that will come into play. No don’t be ridiculous) daughter Vanessa ,who was just so desperate to come along to this ‘top secret ‘ mission.

Without going into specifics the characters set off and stumble upon each notorious Dinosaur from the previous film, though without any sense of awe or wonder from the audiences perspective, with the overly intrusive sentimental score from John Williams popping up on a sporadic basis.
Naturally most of the humans get knocked off one by one from these monsters. Yes these are no longer seen as prehistoric animals ( seen in the previous film ), no, now they’re monsters “Rarrr”

Still with all my sarky complaints the film still has a few minor charms.
The sets are well designed, the dinosaurs rendered CGI and occasional animatronic work still carries a great physical presence and weight.
The T-Rex rampaging through San Diego is a well crafted and enjoyable act and Pete Postlethwaite ,the only actor who displays a sense of the films unintentional goofiness, comes out with much of the credit ,performance wise atleast.

But the lingering feeling from this film is what was Spielberg thinking ?
Was he contractually obliged to do a sequel to his previous entertaining smash hit ?
Or maybe its just a simple case ,with the subjects he was focusing on at the time, of him wanting abit of a fun leeway from those dramatic historical projects.
Either way the film feels less of a intelligent and yet rewarding entertaining Spielberg film and more of a daft, hackneyed Brett Ratner one.

And yes Vanessa, the failed gymnast student , shows the (lost) world her amazing abilities as she elegantly manoeuvres herself to kick a dinosaur in the head and through the nearby window.
That.Really.Happens.
