Begovic

I was thinking about this earlier and I couldn't find any logical reason for him to move to Chelsea.

Does he just want to sit on the bench and collect his money and trophies with no contribution to the cause

Some keepers don't mind sitting on the bench, its worth remembering he was understudy to Sorensen at Stoke for a while.

Cudicini and Toldo were top keepers who spent years on the bench, Reina went to Bayern knowing he won't get in ahead of Neuer.

I prefer Begovic to Loris. And he's far too good to sit on the Chelsea bench. I reckon Valdes will be our first choice keeper next season anyway and think he was signed with the premise of becoming our first choice keeper

We can do so much better than Begovic, really don't get the fuss about him

Yes exactly my point. You'd think they would rather contribute for a lesser side and possible earn a big move where they will be number one than sit on the bench and pick up their pay packet

At least Vorm could foresee Lloris moving on and being ready to step in. Courtious is their no 1 for 20 odd years.

As a Chelsea fan I'll be delighted if this happens. A lot of the top teams have two very good keepers so why shouldn't Chelsea?

Utd have DeGea and Valdes so it's quite strange that a Utd fan should be writing this.

Begovic is better than that IMO. He was making all sorts of noise about a month ago that wherever he is he wants to be a number 1 choice as he's entering his prime age. Hope this doesn't go through because he's a very good goalie who's primarily being signed to help them fulfil their homegrown quota.

Is Lloris probably moving this window?

Unlikely to have De Gea much longer and as I said Valdes is arguably a different case. Back from a long term injury, possibly past his best and number one for years with one of the most successful teams ever winning everything possible.
What has Begovic really achieved?

Valdes could still be first choice keeper at a host of top teams and when he went to Utd there was no talk of DeGea going to Real.

So not really much difference between both scenarios.

De Gea to Real has been going on since October last year

I think everyone knows that DDG is moving to Madrid, if not now, then next season, Courtois isn't going anywhere. Strange move by Begovic.

It's a strange one this - from the player's prospective.

It makes me wonder if Chelsea are expecting Real Madrid to nick their number one keeper. Unlikely as that may be, they must have told this lad something to make him believe he will get game time.

I'm not having it that he is going there to sit on the bench, but then why let PC leave?

Strange.

Some of these players don't even love the game they play, they treat it as a job. Maybe he will be happy to just sit on the bench and play a few cup games.

I agree with the general sentiment, that Begovic seems too good to just sit on the bench. I wonder if he's at least been promised some cup games by Chelsea.
It's a great deal for Chelsea though - our second goalkeepers have had plenty of game time over the past couple of years, so it's nice to have a strong backup. One who counts as homegrown is even better.

Thinking about it a bit more.

Begovic has made between 30-40 appearances a season since he moved to Stoke, he goes to Chelsea he might make 10-15, depending on injuries to Courtois, he'll play the cup games and the odd league game perhaps and maybe a dead rubber CL game.

He might be thinking that although he plays less games, he's on more money, lives in swanky West London and might get to play in a cup final and win something that he would have contributed to.

It is a risk though, Joes could turn round and say Courtois is number 1 in all comps and Begovic just sits around twiddling his thumbs.

Dont utd still have anders lindegard. Hes a quality keeper rotting in utds reserves somewhere.

Courtois will not be able to play every game.

Not literally EVERY game, but if he misses 5-6 games a season would the move have been worth it for Begovic?

Why let Cech go if this was remotely possible?

Begovic would probably play in all Cup games as well as occasional PL games when Courtois is injured or out of form.

If Courtois has a bit of an injury at any point in any season Begovic could play as many as 20-30 games in a season.

Very average keeper imo but yes he does seem happy just to pick up his wages for nothing
