I'm going to complain to the admins that this is clear wummery, and then I'm going to add this Arsenal fan to my collection of filtered Arsenal fans, as this is a very good reminder of why I filter you idiots in the first place. Good DAY!

Not sure how spending 50 million on an unproven Englishmen with an attitude problem compares to chasing a proven top player like Muller.

That said, United have been overspending in a way. It seems like they've bought a lot of players who don't necessarily compliment each other or have a clear "philosophy".

It's something Liverpool, City and Tottenham as well as clubs like QPR etc are very guilty of.

It's why Southampton, who bought players to compliment their style - rather than just aiming for top players - coped far better with transition. Stoke under Pulis and West ham under Fat Sam both know how they want to play and it's that clear direction that has and will work well.

I'm glad there United fans who can ignore a slight dig. United spend quite a bit, so has every top 5 club, except Southampton. At the end of the day, the money spent has to bring a return or some improvement. £70 million for Muller is crazy; good player but that is crazy money.

Nothing I said was untrue. United have done every single one of the acts I mentioned.

Perhaps I should clarify that it was sarcasm...

Although I'd say there were a few bits that were untrue in it I don't think a lack of factuality is grounds for a complaint anyway.

An Arsenal 60k>United 80k. Hawkings proved this in some mathematics journal years ago.

I'm an Arsenal fan but decided to reply seriously despite this mostly being a WUM article.

70m for Muller is crazy but not in modern football terms. He's a very good player and the club he plays for doesn't need to sell at all - because football is so ridiculous atm 70m is possibly even less than current market value unless Bayern actually want to sell.

I don't buy the market value explanation? In normal markets, prices eventually return to a normal price. It happens in real estate, stock indexes, currencies, and other measures of value. How is it that in football, and sport in general, is it justified to see values rise past astronomical figures. Granted I didn't focus on Econ or Finance in school (sciences, though), so I'm not familiar with these sort of trends.

posted on 21/7/15

Supply and demand, there are more money soaked clubs after top quality players than there are top quality players.

Which will continue to drive the price up until it reaches an equilibrium where only a few can afford the prices for the few top footballers, from my limited education in economics.

Quite simply, more money.

If you want to use the housing market, just simplify your thought process and don't think about it as anything more than buyers becoming hugely richer.

The housing market is a lot more complicated and fragile than what's going on in football because it's all based on debt/loans.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
But football is also based on debts and loans; Clubs incur huge debts that they then pass along to another owner/sponsor--AC Milan for example, and even Madrid with the naming rights for the Bernabeau, which is sacrilegious, in my view.

There is too much artificial inflation in football. Some of the evaluations don't appear to be what would happen in a market that operates solely by supply and demand. For example, for a player like Stones, is he really within a pool of players his age and skills that exhibit talent worth 30 million? Or is this because Chelsea decided they would pay whatever they wanted to get him, like the kid who spends 1500 for a PS4 just to get it on the first day (I realize the PS4 is in higher supply than John Stones). Again, I'm not saying Stones isn't a talented player, but for within the supply of players at or above his skill level, with the same level of availability, and at the same age, is he a normal price for that profile of player? Or is it an inflated price?

Players such as Di Maria, Ozil, Sanchez, Suarez, Bale, are like buying a Rolls Royce--you know you are getting quality, and the price tag is justified by the components and a well-established reputation, regardless of whether the transmission fails within a year.

Stones, Sterling, Cuadrado, Mangala, Shaw, Carroll, Benteke--to me it is as if someone decided they wanted a Fiat as soon as it rolled off the factory floor, and they would pay whatever it took, despite their being equally valuable or better cars around. And when the valuation for these type of players is inflated, other clubs normalize the price of their own players fitting the same profile, thus artificially inflating the market. It seems like a distortion. There might be little economic/financial theory to support me, though.

Somehow my WUM article has become serious
