Having read Rafael's actual words, I think what he meant was that LVG didn't like him FROM A FOOTBALLING PERSPECTIVE. There's no implication that there was any personal antipathy.

"I know that he didn't like me, but if that's because I'm Brazilian, I don't know."

he's promoted Periera to the first team, so that stupid theory is thrown out of the window.

Well he had many years to stake his claim as a regular starter, form, injuries etc just meant it didn't work for him, for every Utd fan who loved him I could find another who never rated him, personally after 7 years? I don't think he ever was the answer for us but that's just me, lvg clearly preferred Valencia last year maybe he saw more in training sessions, good luck to him anyway

Pereira is from Belgium.

I don't think so much it was that LVG didn't like him but more in that he didn't trust him to be able to keep fit.

Most of us were bemused that Valencia started ahead of him at RB, but then Valencia wasn't always limping of the field before half time.

To be fair, Rafael is quite careful to only acknowledge awareness of the 'LVG doesn't like Brazilians' theory rather than endorse it. It could even be that he was just answering a question about it. Overall, this doesn't come across as a particularly bitter comment on Rafael's part. He's disappointed LVG didn't choose to play him and that's just about it.

His parents are Brazillian though, I'd say he's more Brazillian than Belgian. Periera was on his way out from the club as well, until he spoke with Van Gaal and signed a new contract.

If I recall correctly...

Born in Belgium to Brazilian parents, Pereira is eligible to represent either of those two nations at international level. He initially represented Belgium at under-17 and under-18 level, but has since stated, "My heart is Brazilian." He received his first Brazil call-up in 2014, joining the under-20s on their successful Panda Cup campaign in Asia.

Problem with LVG is that if he doesn't like a player which he can decide fairly quickly, he'll rarely change his mind, just ask Riquelme.

I understand 1982, but he's still Brazillian at the end of the day. His parents come from there and he's chosen to play for their national team.

Pereira was born and raised in a town not far from Antwerp, where Van Gaal lived and played.

They'll have a cultural understanding I'm sure.

If I were a rabid Brazilaphobe, that would be enough to put me off Pereira. We can thus conclude that LVG doesn't have an aversion to Brazilians, but rather once fell out with Rivaldo.

"I'd say he's more Brazillian than Belgian."

How the hell could you know? I know people who's parents are different nationalities than where they were born and grew up and everyone's feelings towards what nation they feel more connected with.

Only recently, he used to play for the Belgian youth teams. If he got a senior call up wouldn't surprise if he switches back. As he's Belgian.

I remember people saying Van Gaal doesn't get on with South Americans as well. He's got some love in with Valencia first of all, and he's also purchased 3 Argentinian players in his time with us which is the most from a particular country.

Vinnie Jones played for Wales, does that make him Welsh? The country you choose to play for does not represent the nationality you feel inside. He probably has a connection to both but seeing as he has lived in Europe his entire life I would imagine his upbringing was very different to Rafael's to any comparison can't be made.
