Definitely VDV!
I also got excited by Soldado, but more because he was an expensive proven striker, rather than knowing lots about him.
Giovanni dos Santos.
When we signed him I thought yes ! Young promising player coming from a club where appearances are hard to get only for Redknapp to ruin him before he really got started.
I still follow him with Mexico and LA Galaxy.

VDV for me. That was a stellar signing. Watched his CL debut for us vs. Werder Bremen (?) and he was fantastic. Him and Crouch was an excellent partnership.
Shame we didn't pick him up this summer. He wanted to come back I know he couldn't last more than 60 minutes, but he'd be worth it as an impact sub / to be around the younger players in training/dressing room.
Van Der Vaart was the last.
To a lesser extent Erik Lamela - he looked great on YouTube
Shame he's actually a big, steaming pile of

Thing is, Lamela will probably go and rip it up in Italy (again) and we'll be told how foolish we were to sell.
But it doesn't matter. He's not suited to the PL, sadly. It's too fast and too physical for him. He looks like a kid fan having been plucked from the crowd before kick-off and thrown into the starting XI.
I suspect Poch is continually starting Dier and Lamela to make a point to the Bald One. I.e. SIGN ME A DM AND A STRIKER YOU C***
I think we all got fooled into thinking Lamela was a great signing. But very few of us (if any) could really have based that excitement on prior experience of seeing him play for big clubs in big tournaments!
Davids and VDV certainly ticked the boxes of pedigree/class/reputation

I remember sitting in-front of SSN until around 2am waiting for the Rafa deal to go through. Was very excited about Rafa
weare made a funny
hes so faaacking predictable
faaack off back to the 80s mate
Lol Leandro. We were linked to him so many times I feel like we signed him
Suspect he's feckin' useless. Update:
Cruzeiro
On 29 December 2014, after lengthy negotiations, Damião was loaned to league champions Cruzeiro, in a season-long deal, after a largely disappointing year at Santos.

I'd be quite excited if we signed Berahino. Young, English, pacey striker who can finish.
Ooh - was excited when we signed Jermain Defoe too. Thought he'd be a bit of a legend.
Ah. Also when we signed Robbie Keane from Leeds. I was one excited kid.
Alderweirld, genuinely was ecstatic as he was such a good player last year. We also confirmed the stadium-nfl deal that day. It was great.
Before that Lamela as I follow Roma and thought he was top class.
Before that VDV.
Then Darren Bent before that probably
