The 'Spent quarter of a billion' Excuse.

Yeah I hate when people throw around this argument too.

This summer we have broken even and that is before the imminent sale of Hernandez and probably De Gea.

Man City have spent over 160 million this summer alone and they have apparently done good business

Spurs, Villa, Newcastle and now Swansea.... the same old shiiiii

We have hardly set the world alight, ok, 7 points from 12 is hardly title challenging form but there is so much potential for us to play better than we are doing.

Compare our past few seasons spending to Liverpool's and it's MUCH MUCH better than theirs.

posted on 30/8/15

Liverpool have spent nearly as much in PL era as United have incredibly. We have 13 titles to show for it. They have ZERO.

Spending money isn't a guarantee of success. Money at Liverpool has been spent abysmally over the years and it's been spent pretty poorly at United since our last truly great team of 2008

They were only bargains because nobody else wanted them,so you have made the final of the negative equity cup, well done.

Bayern were sniffing around Darmian and Barca were rumoured to be lining him up as Alves' replacement if he didn't sign a new contract.

Daley Blind was nailed on for Utd and was probably why nobody ever made any firm interest.

posted on 30/8/15

Agreed on darmian and blind, good value. Schwienstieger is quality, undoubtedly. But the jury is still out on Shaw for me, does not look like he will be worth 30m. Could argue he has potential, but his technique, passing decsision making are very average. Excellent pace, but no guile.

It's not an excuse you clown. People have every right to complain when there has been no evident improvement in our attacking play and we still haven't bought a world class striker, winger or centre back. Undoubtedly our central midfield has improved but that wasn't exactly a difficult feat to achieve considering we inexplicably persisted with dross like Cleverly and Anderson for so long. However, our squad still lacks depth and soon we may now only have striker at the club if Hernandez is sold. The front six in particular look so devoid of pace, creativity and any cutting edge. There is no point in sugar coating it, we have been spectacularly bad in the transfer market these last few years. Almost as bad as Pool and Spurs.

Spending stats are just jealousy and banter

No idea why they cause so much contention

You paying Rooney 300k a week means feckall. Because you can afford it.

Fair comment Kaiser's

It's the fact our own fans have started using the spending as an excuse, probably the same fans who want us to make Football Manageresque changes every season.

Shaw may not be worth £27m but its good value if we get over 10 years service out of him

posted on 30/8/15

The spending has been bad. Very bad. We are completely overloaded in midfield, which is why we're trying to convert Blind to a CB! It's also why our best outfield player of the past two seasons is now not getting much game time.

Conversely, we have insufficient CBs, Strikers andGK.

posted on 30/8/15

In a dig at your owners, you should be spending more

You've got around 450mil in revenue (we've got about 250 for reference)

Even if you get some wrong (again who cares, it's peanuts really) you should be buying cavani or ibra just in case.

I do think you're underspending significantly. You could buy so much more with no financial risk. Even big names

posted on 30/8/15

We haven't converted Blind there, he has played centre back many times for Ajax and has played there for Holland too.

Sure, we have plenty of midfield options but all top teams need this, its a requirement, and we have a damned good set of midfielders to boot.

Agreed, we do look light upfront, especially now Hernandez has left. I did stipulate we were one or two player's short in my original post. A striker and a winger for me.

Only a goalkeeper if De Gea does leave. Unless Valdes has rebuilt bridges with Van Gaal which I very much doubt.

Nope, I'm not bothered about losing games here and there, it is the lack of improvement that is concerning. LVG has been banging on about his so called philosophy, yet the team looks so fractious, disjointed and laborious in possession. We've sold both RVP and Di Maria without brining in adequate replacements and are now evidently short up front. You are severely misguided if you think we will be challenging City for based on what we've seen so far this season. Are only saving grace is that Arsenal, Pool and Chelsea currently look just as average as we do

Myra but at a vastly bigger sum than 27 m when you factor in his wages, which will increase with every contract, so that does not work for me.

I'd expect for 27m a quality player, and to be fair he's a decent player, but he is most certainly not worth that kind of money. Even if paying for potential, he just does not have the forward looking attributes (minus pace) to make me think we have a potentially world class lb. His defensive game can be good, but position ally he is often caught out too.

That's why the jury's still out for me.

posted on 30/8/15

It's not so much the amount we've spent but how we've spent it.

Okay, so we have spent a quarter of a billion, but LvG is still complaining about a lack of pace up top, he's had three transfer windows to sort it out.

If Hernandez goes, which it looks like he will (Leverkusen) then that leaves us with a struggling Rooney, and I'm assuming a new striker, but we're still one short in that department, and what if the new signing takes a while to settle in?

Gomis targeted Blind today and more teams will do in the future, he has actually done quite well at centre back but I'd rather we had an actually defender along side Smalling.

The full-backs have been good though and Schweini is a boss

I'm sorry to sound rude, but did you miss the bit in my original post where I stated that we are "one or two players short of a title challenging squad".

I'm not saying we are the reincarnation of Sacchi's Milan, far from it, but we have built a solid squad that is capable of another top 4 finish.

Admittedly, we should be aiming to push for the league, BUT we are 4 games in, we still look rusty, a lot of our player's don't look 100% yet and there is so much scope for improvement.

I say it all the time, our club is lumbered with so many embarrassing fans who cry at the first sign of danger and seem like it's a chore to support Utd. We have been spoilt feckin rotten and I can't wait for us to taste some success again but we don't have a divine right to it.

Shaw is very young and has all the physical attribute you CAN'T coach.

His positional play is w@nk but that's something he can learn. Until today he's been our 2nd best player this season imo behind Smalling, so I think in the long run he'll come good. Whether it's 30m good, time will tell!

By the way schweinsteiger cost 14M...

posted on 30/8/15

I think shaw will end up an excellent signing to be honest and worth the money

The only thing that will wind me up is when it's going well you'll probably make annoying comments about he's the best fullback in the solar system, probably the Galaxy, when in reality he isn't. Just a good buy and player.

But he's scary getting forward with his pace

Bruce and Pally.

At least LVG has acknowledged what is so glaringly obvious to us fans.

I bet everything I own on the fact that Van Gaal has been trying his hardest to get in a player that fits this profile, he won't be sat twiddling his thumbs and doing nothing about it.

If we don't sign a player of this ilk, it's because the person in question is not available or interested.

I would respect the fact he won't panic buy someone like Sadio Mane, who is solid but is not an improvement on what we have already, despite the fact he is pacey.

He cost 6 million according to reports in Germany. He was in the last year of his contract, I very much doubt we paid 14 mil for him. 6 million sound's about right to be honest.
