To be fair
I would gladly have sterling play for us, I think he is decent is he is absolutely rapid too. One of the quickest players I've seen.

how on earth can anyone on here refer to £36m as a "decent fee"?

city were mocked for sterling's fee, but sterling has achieved far more in the game than this kid, and is PL tested to boot.

don't think anyone is decrying the signing of the player, but the fee looks utterly ludicrous.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sterling has done very little in the game
----------------------------------------------------------------------
he has 19 goals in the PL and 16 international caps.

martial has 10 goals in ligue 1 and 0 caps.

sterling is also PL proven.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sterling did fa last season for Liverpool and has had a so so enland career so far.

I don't think that's fair.
England are sheet, and so are Liverpool

I'm not going to bother even asking the question, but we both know that 99.9% of United fans would have taken sterling over martial, at broadly similar prices.

you don't think there might be a reason why 99% of people on here don't know him? i know ligue 1 is not the most widely watched league, but everyone knew who hazard was.

It does seem to be a gamble by utd. I cant say I have ever heard of the player or seen him play.

But 90% of transfers are gambles anyway are they not?

There are very few players bought by clubs that you know wil be a success.

In the modern game, there are only a handful of players that you would feel comfortable handing out big money out for and you would know they would be a guaranteed success.

LVG knows more about the game than any of the posters on here so he must see something in this guy.

If he proves a hit it will be seen as a master stroke and if he fails he is still young enough for utd to recoup the majority of their outlay be selling him on.

I wonder why we are buying a striker with pace when we don't play with pace.
We camp inside the oppositions half passing the ball around to no end.

posted on 31/8/15

It's an interesting buy even if a lot of money. LVG likes a mixture of youth and experience in his sides. United have always gone for young ins with plenty of potential even when buying and splashing the cash. Rio,Rooney,Ronaldo to mention a few.
We are crying out for pace and although I have not seen much of him myself he looked dangerous against Arsenal and the type of player we needed. Someone that scares he life out of defenders with pace.
I said at the time we should have gone for Sterling and we should have. He got slated by most because he was at Lpool and maybe as he is English too but the lad has huge potential and now is fulfilling it at our noisy neighbours who are getting a whole lot louder !

Hearing Mendes could be involved in all of this.

posted on 31/8/15

This signing could work in our favour if we play him up top. Whether LVG got the balls to drop Rooney is a whole new issue.

The French football manager obviously heard of the lad and called him up to the senior squad way before utd made a bid. This lad has obviously been on the radar of a lot more knowledgeable people than you or me and 99% of English football fans

given the success of united's scouts/LVG's buys over the last few years i would probably back half the posters on here, armed with a copy of fifa 15, over the united buying team.

i'm not saying people on here have not heard his name.

i am saying he's not exactly on most people's radars - ie people don't actually know him as a player - because he hasn't been tearing up trees across europe.

and yet he's costing united more than chelsea paid for hazard, who was only 2 years older and had already won french player of the year twice.

Don your initial comparison was with sterling and what European trees did he tear up to justify his fee. As for hazard we tried to sign him but he went the way of robbin and now pedro

Not just in relation to Martial. Most people here are going through the five stages of grief based on second guessing what deals we will or won't do in the coming hours, which players won't play well enough / would play well but won't get picked over the next ten months, and over our league and CL campaigns, whose utter failure are predetermined.

I wouldn't mind so much if they didn't feel the need to emote about it.
________________

Spot on. Some people are jumping to wild and baseless conclusions and then slating the manager for what they assume the outcome will be.

E.g. this little gem from "United We Win":-

"he's not a striker is he though? he's going to play probably ahead of Mata, therefore weakening us."

So now LVG has decided that he will replace Mata with this kid in order to weaken us? And this is based on what exactly? Oh, who cares...LVG OUT!

For all we know this kid will get games on the right with Mata playing in the middle...you know....like people have been crying out for all month? But wait, that means Herrera can't play in that position....LVG OUT!
