Come on, we're done in the market.

Quite happy we have spent money yesterday though, know nothing about the lad. Excited to see him.

Would be very surprised if we sign anyone else

I still dont know why we didn't go for Berahino for £10m less than this Martial guy, is he better?

PL proven goal scorer, young and will only improve. Would have made more sense to me

Maybe we are done, but it's not a certainty that nothing's going on behind the scenes.

Agree about Martial, seems to have some pace and power to his game, something we lack in the final third. Looking forward to seeing how he'll settle.

I'm accustomed to being surprised after the last two summer windows.

It seems to me logical that we should spend money today. Taking Hernandez and Januzaj out of the reckoning yesterday, when we already looked depleted in attack, makes no sense unless we are preparing to buy someone new.

Let's see if events follow the logic though.

Honest to god.......we've sold Hernandez, loaned out Januzaj and look like we've spent a small fortune on an unknown quantity.

What do you expect people to be like? We've got a woefully out of sorts Wayne Rooney, James Wilson, Fellaini and a 19yr old (at the moment)

I haven't seen anyone say anything negative about Martial. 99% of us haven't even seen him play more than the 2 games vs Arsenal in the CL.

It's just incredibly brave (undestatement of century) to turn to this kid to add the much needed goals to the side.

We don't buy another goalscorer today, I'll be fuming.

Two different kinds of players Mike, Berahino is a proper striker, but it appears Martial can play anywhere along the frontline, but mainly as a wide forward.

I thought Berahino could come from the right tbh, my mistake.

We certainly need a 'proper' striker though, even more so than another wide man.

I hope we sign Berahino today too. Been saying it all summer. Doesn't look like we are even in for him though unless it's somehow gone totally under the radar of every journo and big mouth agent.

Agreed RR,

While the window remains open, I'll remain hopeful that certain positions will or may be addressed.

Wasn't he seen spotted at OT towards the end of last season? Maybe there's something in that.

The past 24 hours have definitely been interesting.

While I'm excited by the prospect of Martial I also think at his age the transfer is still a very big risk. At the ages of 17-21 there are literally hundreds of huge talents out there but for whatever reason most fail to make the grade. In Martial we look to be signing someone who has great potential but for it to be fully realised will demand a lot from both us and the player. To spend that much on a player who could still fail and when we ourselves have a player in Wilson who for so long was being hailed as one of the finest prospects from United's academy in years shows you the fine line in these young player's careers. From what I've read even when Monaco paid £3.7m for him just 2 years ago many felt that was over prices which just goes to show how incredibly silly the money being pumped into the PL is.

The other concern is while I feel we should always be looking for the best talent around the world and bringing them in, at the same time we have far bigger priorities and one of those is getting in a proven goalscorer.

Anyway, I'm excited about Martial, like I'm excited about Memphis, but both are kids who have so much to develop and learn and will likely frustrate us often over the next year or 2.

We have spent a fortune on the lad, and I would assume for very good reason.

It does. But when was the last time this club followed any sort of logic?

What's negative about that Busby? He's 19yr old nobody who hasn't proved anything in the game yet. That's not being negative. That's being a realist I'm afraid.

I said yesterday he could go on and be next Benzema, or next Bellion for all I know.

It's a HUGE gamble with the situation we're in now. If we had 2-3 attackers all in good form, then I'd be a bit more relaxed about it. Wouldn't be as much pressure on him.

Think before you post please. I don't write people off before seeing them. I just don't think this transfer is a sensible one right now. Hope he proves me wrong.

Probably due to the fact we have an obscene amount of money to spend. A 19 year old is never a guarantee, it's gonna take a lot of hard work over the next couple years as well as luck from both the club and the lad to succeed.

Good post.

Though, in the grand scheme of things, every single transfer ever made is a risk. Granted, it's a lot of money, however, having managed to remove players on big contracts from our wage bill, coupled with the fact that our net spend this summer hasn't been huge, it's refreshing to see new blood coming in.

I'd rather have Depay and Martial on our books than not. Youth, pace, power, an eye for goal, I just hope we can nurture and develop those talents further over the next 2-3 years.

Rome wasn't built in a day, I'll be happy to wait for any future success that may come our way.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We followed logic when we sorted out the problematic right back position with Darmian. And when we ensured we have strength in depth in central midfield - an area in which we had been lacking for years.

Unbridled pessimism is no more valid than baseless optimism. I'm sure mistakes have been made by LVG and Woodward but it doesn't follow that they are totally blind and incompetent and will obviously do the polar opposite of the right thing in the coming hours. The wise thing is to wait and see rather than rage about terrible errors that may just not have been made.

Stretty, many people on here are guilty of contradiction in this case.

Moaning that we are Utd and we make our own stars, buying world class/ ready made stars doesn't work.

We go and spend a fortune on a young player, who by all accounts is a good player, and he isn't a big enough name.

Exactly. Every transfer poses a risk. Who'd have thought a year ago that Di Maria would already be gone? Not many.

However.....when you've not got a single attacker on form at the club and have sold most of them off.......maybe a 19yr old who isn't anywhere near the finished article is a HUGE gamble to take.

I literally know nothing about this kid and wish him all the best and hope that he does become the best French striker of all time......however it's incredible pressure on his shoulders to boost our attack and add goals.

Which is why I remain hopeful another striker will be brought in today to ease the burden and maybe give Wayne that kick up the arris he so badly needs.

Jolly

Of course all transfers are a risk to a degree but I would say hypothetically Pedro is less of a risk (whether he wanted to join us or not), especially for what we need right now.

And while I agree you should always have an eye for the future you also need to an eye on the here and now and right now we are in short supply of goal scorers. But you never know, there's still a few hours left, let's see what happens.

No - the real mistake here has been selling players BEFORE signing their replacements. The result has been a last minute panic session.

Make no mistake, we wouldn't have planned to have had such a busy day yesterday. This has all come about because of failings over the past few weeks.

As far as I'm concerned the only 'thought-out' signings we've made have been Schneiderlin and Darmian. The others (including Schweinsteiger) are punts.

Absolute chaos.
