I believe It was based on a true story with a bit of fiction thrown in,

It's based on the memoirs of Henri Charriere and is largely based on fact, and whilst I don't doubt it's not 100% accurate, it's probably enough to qualify as a "true" story

More likely he read "dry guillotine" by rene belbenoit and thought there's some money in this lark and collated former fellow prisoners stories into a book. Some sources seem to reckon that his story is about 10% fact.

It's still a great read though.
