I've recently started boxing training and feck me it's so hard to even get basic footwork right, so much thought has to go into just stepping in any direction, you've to think about so many things at the same time, would highly recommend it though great way to get fit and it's great fun too, never had a fight or anything but hope to start sparring at some point next year when I'm more comfortable.
"1) It takes years of dedication to even get a shot at the title
2) It's the purest form of combat sport there is
3) It brings out peoples primitive instincts when watching. We no longer have the colosseum for entertainment but it’s as (disappointingly) close as it gets
4) People put their bodies and reputations on the line"
Apart from number 2, you can say the same about any sport really. For me.

"...[Ali] was the heavyweight champion, that probably means less today then it did in Ali's era, it's the greatest prize in sport...."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do people really believe this? Is it just me?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Referred to as the greatest prize I should have said, it's not going to be to someone who doesn't like Boxing. My point was it's seen as the biggest prize in boxing so can be a reason why Ali for example is seen as the greatest of all time when SSR was the better boxer but as he fought at a lower weight division he might not get the same recognition by people outside of the sport as he should.
I think today due to the lack of talent in the Heavy Weight division more people now recognize what goes on at lower weight with say Mayweather being an example of this as he's widely considered the best in the business.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
and now Mayweather's gone you're looking at Roman Gonzalez who's probably the no1 p4p fighter going atm
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah him or for me it's GGG but he's not had the biggest fights yet so probably can't put him there just yet, but he's my favorite fighter right now love how he stalks opponents, he cuts off the ring so well and his power is just astonishing.
And no.2 is arguable. There's more "pure" combat sports out there - if that's what you want - they dispense with the gloves for one thing.

the misconception is that Gloves means the punches aren't as hard, they're harder, you punch someone full on in the skull and you'll break your hand if you're not wearing gloves

You can't compare being hit by a 15 stone man made of muscle and trained for fighting with many other sports.
One vs one, in a ring in front of thousands of people after months of training and build up takes a special kind of person.
Not suggesting it's any more talented than other sports, just putting points across as to why it's so prestigious.
As I said, there's something very primitive about it.

UFC is dull as dishwater. If I wanted to watch two men cuddling and rolling round together there are videos online for that.
Each to their own I guess. Personally don't want to watch people choke eachother out, or punch someone on the floor who appears defenseless.
Definitely not over rated. Suprb boxer, Olympic champion don't forget. The fights you mentioned were at the end of his career. He fought and beat the best in his prime, and his prime was long for a boxer and included time in prison.
Well, generally speaking, people int get punched in the floor defencelessly of theyve already been pretty badly hurt.
Both boxing and UFC can have dull fights, it comes down to styles and tactics.
But when you get a great UFC fight it's just as entertaining as boxing, and you can't avoid fight after fight as a champ either.
Boxing needs a revamp, reduce the number of belts and stop producers having so much control over who fights who.
Boxing is the best it's been in years!
British boxing is exciting again
Boxing is only good when you get nights like on last Saturday when fury beat wlad. You get such a buzz from it. Then you get nights like mayweather and pacman and you just lose faith in it.
Ali was overrated. He has been placed on a pedastle where no new boxer can ever hope to reach. This is the definition of overrated surely? To be so rated, as to eliminate the chance of anyone ever matching you.
There have been better boxers than Ali imo.
But Iron Giant, suppose your opinion is wrong, because I haven't seen a better one.
And at sometime one will come along.

Of course Ali is a hall of famer in boxing. And to many he will be the greatest. But to many others, Liston, Foreman, Lewis, Tyson, Marciano, Mayweather Jr. and absolutely LOADS more (not going to type a names list out) are the greatest. There are too many to pick from to say that any one is categorically the best ever.
But Ali enjoys a praise and diefication which other equally deserving boxers do not. In every aspect of being a star heavyweight, Ali had a better with the expection of engaging the media. Foreman had more power, Patterson was faster, Liston had better footwork (unfortunately also some mob ties that would put Tyson's to shame - the less said the better).
Nobody gets the singular praise Ali's flair gave him. No one else gets to have none boxing fans say "they were OBVIOUSLY the greatest ever!:.
And that is what assures that our Cassius is now solidly overrated.
Maybe the others are just under-rated
He beat Patterson. Liston and Foreman. And he did it with style and chutzpah unmatched.
All the best rated F1 drivers and jockeys are overrated as sportsman since the cars and horses do most of the work.
Andy Murray is getting a bit overrated after the Davis Cup triumph.
Nobody has beaten more heavyweight hall of famers than Ali. Do a top 10 heavyweights list and Ali will have beat 7/8, to say he's over rated is ludicrous.

He did beat them. But that hasn't got any relevance to Ali being overrated.
Anyone who can say without a shred of doubt or question that Ali was the greatest boxer of all time is biased. Because it's subjective and others have better records than him.
The deification Ali receives makes him overrated, regardless of how good he actually was.
Why are people getting strung up on others opinions? Seems a really good topic this for people to say why they think x,y and z are overrated and for others to say why not without attacking the poster.
Would like to see some more bits on who you all think is overated and why, and why others may not agree. (and why have we suddenly got stuck on Ali???)
P.s May/Pac is a criminally underrated fight especially for the defensive quality on show (as much as I can't stand the guy gotta respect his skills)
Scholes was a good shout, an absolutley fantastic player in his hey day but deffo overrated especially with the excuses given to him all the time ('Oh he flew in for a tackle there' ' yeah but he's not known for his tackles) etc etc
It's difficult to compare eras of boxers the same as footballers, Ali probably is the greatest heavyweight of all time though.
There are some brilliant boxers outside of the heavyweight division too though.
