In fairness I only mentioned the helpers in one sentence out of eight paragraphs They certainly didn't influence my opinion on the movie, many other things did, just thought they were terrible looking, comedic even.
Surprised you've pulled me up on the helpers when I talked about so many other things.

Tbf you did put it completely took you out of the movie.

Agreed. I think a lot is from expectations, which, George had set up during the prequels.
We see the rise of Vader.
Well that’s bordering on playboy fantasy dreams for a fanboy like me.. but the execution of the story wasn’t what I was expecting.. but I didn’t have expectations here.
For about 8 months i’ve avoided net speculation, certain YouTube channels, trailers, magazines you name it...
and yes, I was surprised. But I did enjoy it.
I had to see it again, now with things making a lot more sense, it still stays joint with TFA and RotJ and Sith imo....
But in fairness, it is a pretty high benchmark to reach..

On Luke's island those helper creatures looked like something I'd see on a budget CBBC program. Completely took me out of the movie as did all the silly quips that didn't work for the most part.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just surprised that something so innocuous and minimal in a star wars movie could actually "take you out" of the movie.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well it did, momentarily at least, especially as I was laughing at how bad it was.

Most of the dislike is from expectations. Many fans, including myself expected certain things and the movie went in a very different direction, hence the mixed feelings on first viewing. With things like Star Wars and Marvel, it is very difficult to take risks because of the die hard fan base and lore.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've heard this a few items - that risks with SW are difficult. I get that, I just question how risky this film actually was.
Ultimately it's an escape and survival film. The first order have them pinned down and they need to find a way to escape. Simple premise and one that SW has done before several times.
I'd say there were two risks within the film; one was the elevation of Kylo to 'big baddie' so early and the other was the broken character of Luke.
Personally I don't mind either of them (albeit I wouldn't have chosen either), they're not the reason I don't feel the film works well. The bigger problem for me is the execution of the storyline and characters which don't seem to add much. The waste of time that was the casino thread and more generally the lack of anything interesting for Finn as a character. DJ as a character I just struggled to see the point of. Rose, ditto. Plasma was a total waste of time. BB8's character felt (to me) more like a 2 hour marketing ploy rather than anything else.
The film felt like a collection of set piece scenes that didn't flow particularly well and, quite often, didn't add a great deal to the actual story. The risks weren't the issue for me. But I do appreciate others disagree and enjoyed the film.

I actually think the backlash on those who criticised the film has been disappointing.
Anyone with an issue has basically been told they're wrong or need to see it again to truly appreciate it.
It's just arrogant. The film is very divisive and I don't think Disney should have gone down that route in just the 2nd saga film.
Too much, too soon.

Fascinating.
That Rey and Luke scene had the right intent but it didn't need the comedic element.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sounds like a pretty rubbish scene to me. Luke lying to Rey, apparently to teach a lesson, and then Luke apologising?
Who is teaching who here?
Wouldn’t the lesson here be, that she doesn’t listen to the light. The pull of the dark side comes too easy for her.
Luke was tricking her. He was showing her what it means to obey the Jedi Code.
She doesn’t think it through.
Thinks killing is the right course of action.
Well that’s my interpretation of the scene, I could be wrong of course.
But why he would apologise to her for that, doesn’t make sense.
It’s like something Yoda would do in Empire no?
The scene was fine up to the point he apologises. That defeats the whole purpose of the 'lesson'.

Fascinating to hear Mark Hamill himself say that he didn't feel he was playing Luke Skywalker in this movie and that when playing this incarnation of Luke he almost had to think of him as an entirely different character:
https://youtu.be/G37NSQf4vwY
Seems he fundamentally disagreed with the portrayal of Luke he was asked to portray in this movie.
yeah i saw that, i am too still conflicted about Luke's story. but i thought he was brilliant.
but we have to see ep 9 for the payoff.
he'll be back as a Force Ghost and maybe, he'll be That Jedi master.
The biggest let down in the film for me was the portrayal of Luke and the manner in which Luke and Snoke died.
Minus a few unnecessary things that had no effect on the plot, the movie was fine up until the part where Luke finds r2 and he plays the Leia clip to Obi Wan. At that point it should have sparked Luke into action as he realises that what has actually caused everything bad post ROTJ is an evil, manipulative being called Snoke. Luke should have then left the island with Rey and gone to confront Snoke and try to turn Ben Solo.
That is how I see it anyway. The fact Luke and Snoke had to die wasn't the problem, the problem is they both went out like little bltches despite being possibly the two strongest force users of all time. If you want episode 9 to focus on Rey and Kylo that is fair enough, I understand Luke especially is overpowering in the saga, but why not have a massive duel between Snoke and Luke showcasting the best of their force abilities before they both meet their end?
