But it really isn't a brilliant film at all - that is precisely the point. It is a very enjoyable, highly unoriginal and derivative action film with gigantic plot holes throughout. If that is deemed sufficient to be described as "brilliant" then I despair at the shallow nature of cinema audiences today.
----------------------------------------------------
Well said. It's not a brilliant film and I think more and more people will start to realise this and be brave enough to come forward and admit it when the hype finally dies down.
-----
Well you might have a long wait because at the moment, it's still bringing in cinema-goers - many for second viewings.
It's an 8.5 on the IMDB which is a resounding thumbs up from fans.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it's sitting at 93%.
Fans and critics love the movie - there will always be fans that disagree but they're in a tiny pocket.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You actually read Fans forums and you will see that a majority don't like it, its the critics that are praising it...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/reviews?ref_=tt_urv
I'm starting to wonder about Critic reviews tbh... They also rated Jurassic World highly, when in fact it was a mediocre throwaway film
----------------------------------------------------------------------
IMDB is not a fan forum.
Its a $hitty little site populated by kids trying to point score and rain on movies that threaten the rating of their own favourites.
Yeah it was a throwaway for me, me and the mrs watched it before xmas at some point and we were like meh (lots of gaping holes, but just about watchable).
Going back to Critics, I would like to conspire that critics may sometimes be swayed into reviewing certain movies more favorable...
No way is The Force Awakens a 93%/8.5... More like a 65%/6.8 IMHO, but ratings mean everything and play a huge role in the film being a financial success
A bit fishy if you ask me or it could be a mixture of a very sheep like audience at present, well esp when it comes to Star Wars

Regarding the RT score, do you really find it that hard to believe that most people liked the movie? Speaking with long term fans and those who take a passing interest in just movies in general, I've not really come across too many people that didn't like it.
Well you might have a long wait because at the moment, it's still bringing in cinema-goers - many for second viewings.
______________
Completely irrelevant.
I paid to see the film twice myself but I still wouldn't give it more than 7/10 (or 7.5 when I am feeling generous).
Some people seem to be unable to distinguish between an enjoyable film and a great film - they just think it must have been great if they really enjoyed it!
Some of my favourite films of all time have major flaws in them. Just because I acknowledge those flaws, it does not make watching those films less enjoyable - but I will not ignore those flaws in rating the film out of ten.
E.g. 28 Days Later is one of my favourites but it has fundamental flaws so I can't score it higher than 8/10. Se7en is another very memorable film but it has an ending which makes no sense so again I wouldn't give it more than 8/10 at the very most.
Also, as I mentioned earlier, The Fast And Furious franchise is one of the most lucrative of all time and one of those films (don't care which) is even in the all time top ten Box Office records. Does that mean it is a great film or that audiences are generally shallow and like cars and explosions?
As for critical acclaim, The Phantom Menace received several 4 star reviews on release and Simon Pegg's "Paul" film also got 4 stars in Empire despite being one of the worst films I have ever seen.
The critics have been blowing JJ for years so I am not surprised that they are overrating one of his films again.

The Force Awakens was a fun film that made me smile and that is what it's for.
Just my latest thoughts on episode 8:
Luke to reject training Rey, Kylo Ren to finish training and become powerful sith, Kylo Ren then facing Rey in a lightsaber duel and coming out on top only for Luke to save the day, Luke to agree to train Rey after Kylo Ren kills Leia.
Thinking episode 8 should be when the bad guys win (always makes for a better film). Here's hoping.
EP 8 is supposed to be a lot darker
How much darker can you get than killing off the franchises all time favourite character and destroying the galaxy's democratic government
If a film is very enjoyable doesn't that make it a good film in its own right?
I get different films for different moods, but I think TFA is something most people will happily watch a lot of times and will enjoy it each time.
A lot of people just like to pick holes in anything and be overly critical for the sake of it, expecting films to be something they were clearly never going to be.
Star Wars has always been pretty cheesy and had a few plot holes, but has just been more about taking us into another brilliant world and having some fun with characters we like. Yes this was a bit unoriginal, but in terms of throwbacks to the previous trilogies but also setting us up to go forward, it did a good job.
I think some people just can't enjoy things unless they're criticising them, so can't truly relax and immerse themselves in certain films.
I would prefer a more sinister premise tbf

So people cant have their own views then?
Of course. I just feel some people are wanting Star Wars to be something it was never going to be and wouldn't have liked the film regardless of what changes were made.
You get this people everywhere... The over cynics, however for me I got the nostalgia, but I'm much more a fan of originality, so for me I feel somewhat underwhelmed...
However we still have 2 films to go and 2 spin offs
That's fair enough, the Star Killer thing was a bit much for me at the time, but looking back it didn't really take away from the film.
I really enjoyed the nostalgia and the new characters and I'm very excited to see where it goes, so for me it's a very positive step in the right direction!
I think I'd be a little bit disappointed if certain big things are left unanswered, but right now I'm just excited about being excited about the franchise again!
So what have we here then?
well, for me, i've seen it 3 times, still very much enjoying the fun that is Star Wars...
but i still rank it 3rd/4th in the franchise. there are some that overthink SW on both sides of the love/hate spectrum.
Star Wars was always about fun/fantasy storytelling.
i've said that yes, there are flaws as with all of them, but for me it's pros far outweigh the cons.
things are set up nicely...
Some people seem to be unable to distinguish between an enjoyable film and a great film - they just think it must have been great if they really enjoyed it!

So let me get this straight - the millions of people lauding this film are all wrong and they're actually just confusing good with great?
You keep telling yourself that.
And whoever tried to pass off 'Paul' as a comparison - that just won't do. Paul was forgotten about a week after its release. This film has rocketed to the top of the box office and stayed there.
It also received more than a solitary 4 star Empire review.
Perhaps those that thought it was average were probably confusing average with great.
I have no idea what you are going on about?
