i also never quite understand comments on here telling everyone expressing a negative opinion to "support the team", as if a few whinges on here are the same as putting a brick through LVG's windscreen.

in terms of the topic at hand i think everyone now agrees that united do need a top centre forward, given that rooney is clearly not that any longer and martial is a bit raw (and arguably better on the left), so in an ideal world the club drops £50m + on lukaku/kane etc rather than rummaging through the bargain bins.

the issue is not whether those top players can be got, but whether they can be got in january. i assume the club's plan was to get top 4 this season with rooney, then bring in his replacement next summer; unfortunately lvg's and the team's mediocrity, and the threat of finishing 5th or below, has scuppered those laid-back plans.

if the club can get lukaku for £50m in january, go for it; if not the only question is whether any player, however modest, would improve the current squad for the next 5 months, hence the talk of arnautovic, long etc.

I always get the feeling that Stretty thinks we should have 25 W/C players in our squad.

That might not be the case, but he does give that impression.

But I do agree with him on this point.

One would hope.

Being Irish I'm a huge fan of Shane Long (that winner v ze Germans!!!) and I'd imagine I've seen him play live more then most on here, he's good but not prolific enough don't think he's ever broken 10 goals in a PL season, he needs 3 chances to score 1, misses easy chances but does have a great work rate and is excellent in the air.

Be a good back up for a top 4 side but you wouldn't want to be relying on him.

He is an impact player, he's not all about goals.

Hes not about much else either if we are honest.

personally i dont see an issue with wanting arnie or long per se, but given our current position and likes of rooney struggling we need a better class of player in key positions

say we had keane ad scholes still in mf, then i would have said take a put on gareth barry before everton took him. but right now we need shot of carrick and shweiny due to age so a 34 year old barry would be silly

The one below it went off the rails because the OP of it took offence to bew saying some of our fans get carried away with the flavour of the month.

They do. We frequently see it on here.

I think our proble for quite a while now has been that we have a squad too full of squad players with not enough top quality ion the first XI.

I have no issues with having good players in the squad but we have to be careful for not to bloat the squad too much.

It is a balance but I think two or three players just about nailed on to start would benefit us more at the moment than five or six squad additions.

Once we have the first XI sorted then we can strengthen the squad.

I get the point that we are short of world class players....BUT. I also think there's a tendency for people to look at glamorous names (more often than not Latino sounding!) and assume they're better than what's already in the premier league.

Arnautović is hardly a pete smith typical sounding english name and tbh that doesnt matter one way or the other, it doesnt effect his very limited ability.
