The latest update is spot on. Try factory reseting your chrome cast, apparently that works, re sound.

The Google help technician had me try my chromecast on my other TV, which uses it's native speakers - there is no external AVR. It worked. That was when we ended the session. The technician really didn't figure it out, but he certainly was empathetic to my plight and put me on the Yellow Brick Road. I had to find the Emerald City myself.

I then reasoned that it would work on my main TV if I switched the sound to the internal speakers vs. the external AVR. Yes, indeed. That fixed it.

To share with other readers, let me say that if you're satisfied with the native sound of your TV, this is a quick and very easy solution. I'm not. The sound on my Sony TVs is, in my experience, quite good, but way inferior to the sound I'm getting out of my Sony Blu-Ray player and 5.1 speaker setup, even without surround sound which only makes excellent audio terrific. But this is way off the main point. Just sayin'...

So for the rest of you with the 'no audio' issue, if you are using an external AVR, that may well be the problem. Try switching your audio to the TV's internal speakers.

The better to understand the signal paths, I created a diagram of my setup. I’m attaching it. One can see why installing the Chromecast on my TV leaves me w/o sound when I’m using the AVR: the signal path from my AVR to the TV is one-way whose purpose is to transmit the video from the AVR to my TV. There is no path in the other direction to deliver the audio from the TV to the AVR. It’s why I’m inclined to be optimistic that connecting my Chromecast device to the unused HDMI(2) input on the AVR will allow the sound to be played through the AVR (my Sony Blu-Ray player). I'll try it and post a report.

Hope this is helpful to the rest of you with a similar issue. I know how frustrated I was watching my silent Chromecasts.

I'm a bit puzzled too that no one on the forum picked up on this. I described my configuration with my initial post. Apparently that didn't trigger an "aha" and perhaps exposes a limitation in just naming one's equipment as I did. It's certainly not as clear as including the actual circuit diagram, as I've done now, which I might point out, took not a trivial amount of time to prepare, even using Visio which is an excellent graphic program.
