Fair enough. I don't think it's necessarily about admiring an actors acting, more the story PTA made and the ability to create a character that Sandler's abilities worked with, it was a huge call after making Magnolia. Maybe I'm just a huge PTA fan, my favourite current director by far.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I like Magnolia and love There Will Be Blood. But PTA leaves me a little cold. Maybe it's the sense that the artifice is always left showing. I've come out of films by the Coens feeling more excited and moved.
Rush with Chris Hemsworth is fantastic too

dont understand the hate for Sandler, his films are what they are.
theyre films that arent serious and make you chuckle, theyre a bit silly but thats who he is.
why would anyone watch one of his films and expect an oscar performance?
you just wouldnt because thats not what he's about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People hate a lot of his movies because they are absolute $hite. They're poorly written, poorly acted, and fur the most part, juvenile In the most asinine way.
Also I don't believe there's a single person on the planet, nay, in the universe, who goes into a sandier movie expecting anything that'll be Oscar worthy
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not everyone goes to see a film just because they think it will be Oscar worthy. People go to be entertained. I like some films that critics and other people have panned, not because they are good or great movies, but because the humour or action in it has struck a chord with me and has entertained me.
Some people are entertained by his brand of comedy. Personally, I like one or two of his films, but think the rest are dreadful. Other people will disagree and love most of them.
All about opinions. His comedy must strike a chord with a lot of people or he wouldn't still be around, although I think he gets by on his reputation for the most part these days.

I haven't seen Hard Eight. Forgot about Boogie Nights - no, that's a great film. PTA is one of the best American directors of his generation and an interesting film maker with original ideas. I was just noting a slight reservation I have about his work.

Never seen Donnie Darko? Brilliant movie. Whatever you do, don't watch the Directors Cut. Facks it up massively.
And Red Dawn is an 80's classic. Just don't watch the remake.
Or The Master!!!
I read a thing about PTA who was on the set of Eyes Wide Shut to learn from the master (he also went on Robert Altman sets) and Kubrick pretty much ignored him during shooting, then one day someone told Kubrick who he was and for the rest of the shoot Kubrick couldn't leave PTA alone, continually asking him questions and so fascinated how a 27 year old could make Boogie Nights.
I f-cking love PTA, his films are stunning.

Sidney: Hey hey man, what's the score? Yo! Chump! I'm talking to you! I'm talking to the fvcking air.
Billy: My name ain't chump, it's Billy Hoyle.
Sidney: Billy Hoyle. BILLY HOYLE. Billy Hoyle. Okay Billy... can you count to ten, Billy?
Billy: Yeah.
Sidney: Good. What's the score... Billy?
Billy: I don't know.
Sidney: Then you're a chump!
Billy: I may be a chump, I just said that wasn't my name.
The dialogue in that movie is so good.
Interesting that you mention Kubrick and Altman. Both of them were quite distanced, unsentimental and 'objective' in their film-making style. Maybe it is something similar, a coldness, that I'm getting at as I struggle to express the qualification to my admiration of PTA.
