Wenger's lack of ambition was cruelly exposed 2 years ago when you tried to sign Suarez for that ridiculous sum.

The sum that activated the clause in his contact is not ridiculous.

That doesn't answer DJ's question. I understand that the addition of the single pound over the stated figure of £40m was cheeky, but was valid. The only reason it didn't work was that it wasn't enforceable by Arsenal (as DJ said)... had it worked, we'd all have loved it (for the seasons that Suarez would have been at Arsenal before inevitably moving to Barca). So cheeky? Yes. Ridiculous? No.
Apparently it wasn't actually a release clause anyway, so essentially Arsenal bid a pound more than a clause that they didn't really understand. To me that makes it ridiculous.

There was. Quote from John Henry I copied and pasted from some interview around the time:
"Luis Suarez is the top scorer in the English Premier League which is arguably the top soccer league in the world, And he had a buy-out clause - I don't know what degree I should go into this - but he had a buy-out clause of £40million - more than 60 million (US) dollars. So Arsenal, one of our prime rivals this year... they offered £40million and one pound for him and triggered his buy-out clause.
"But what we've found over the years is that contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England - actually not in England, in world football. It doesn't matter how long a player's contract is, he can decide he's leaving.
"We sold Fernando Torres for £50million. We didn't want to sell but we were forced to. For the first time (with Suarez) we took the position that we weren't selling. Since apparently these contracts don't seem to hold, we took the position we're just not selling and it's been great for Luis, it's been great for us, and what will happen at the end of year... I think we"re going to make Champions League and we have a small chance of winning the Premier League this year..."
why are we still discussing this?????
there's a few idiots on here who insist bidding a pound over £40MILLION was correct.
they are deluded as our board and manager.
Up the bid....bid £50/60mil and get the fecking player. You make that money back when you win leagues/cl's etc.

Because a bid of say 45m would have potentially caused Liverpool to think about maybe cashing in. If I recall correctly, Suarez started that season with a ban from biting.
