Err cos that's what happened?
How can a chance be squandered if he dident get to the ball to get a shot off?
If he was being played in his correct position he might have got onto that pass. Instead he's being played on the wing by that senile sod Hodgson
Has anyone informed turkey that is a friendly
I hope not, I want England to get tough games.
Might actually be better if we took the Spurs players out of the team! Seriously though, Vardy should have took the peno regardless of what the cry babies say on the Spurs page.
On that performance with a very shaky defence getting out of the group will be a good result
Might as well play villas defence, shocking.
Bring in Townsend for some width and put Vardy up front with Alli behind him. If we play 4-4-2 with Stones featuring in that set-up I think we will get hit badly.
Too many Tottenham players in the team. It's no coincidence that England started playing better when they started to play more like Leicester, with Drinkwater on and Vardy up top
England have to go with Kane and Vardy as a front two, in either a 4-4-2 diamond or a 3-4-1-2. And go with a Keegan-esque approach of looking to out-score the opposition. Let's get out there and stick the ball in the net.
I don't really get this article at all. Vardy is going to miss chances or struggle to get on the end of through balls at times. The commentators job is to commentate - I.e to say what is happening.
The pundits at half time and hoddle said he's not effective on the wing so they are in agreement with us.....
I think overall it was an average to poor performance from England because it was so disjointed. I think Woy needs to decide how he’s going to set the team up and pick the players to suit - or decide the players he really wants to accommodate and pick the system that will get the best out of them. At the moment he’s doing neither.
I think Kane is a good player, but his performance at the weekend seemed at bit self-indulgent. Shooting when other decisions were better and taking every free kick. He’s a great goal scorer, but he’s not exactly Beckham with a dead ball.
If you want to play 4-3-3 and Kane is the man then pick the players who will best support him as your wide forwards. Vardy isn’t suited to this role and should not be in the side.
If you want to say that Kane AND Vardy are the men then you have to start with a front 2. Then the dilemma might be who is best to support them just behind out of Rooney and Alli. I’d go with Alli as I think that Rooney has a better range of passing from a deeper position. In this formation I think that you would have to also go with Dier at the base of midfield: the full backs will be providing the width so your defensive midfielder will have to fill in at the back when either bombs forward.
I don’t think that Drinkwater will be as effective as Dier at the base of a diamond. In other formations (4-4-2) he would be more effective as his vision and passing is better.
Horses for courses please Roy.
Is it not a bit worrying, with just a few weeks to go to the start of the tournament, that we still haven't got a clue about what formation or players to play. Roy Hodgson has one job and has had plenty of time to get it right yet the team looks so disjointed and clueless. If there was one thing to learn from Leicester this year is that a settled side creates a brotherhood atmosphere in the dressing room and cohesion on the pitch. England have neither at present.
Zorro, absolutely agree – did you see the documentary about the 66 world cup squad last night? It absolutely emphasised how instrumental that 'band of brothers' mentality was in their success.
I think there are things to be excited about with this England squad and I don't think it was necessarily that bad a performance yesterday. The main issue was that the players were a bit disjointed and not used to each other, but that's something that can be worked on.
It's probably an easy thing to say from a Leicester perspective, but the problems I see are England yet again falling into the same old traps: Players being picked in both the squad and the first 11 on reputation rather than what makes the most effective team; players being selected who are simply not fit, or at least match sharp; cliques forming; players playing for themselves; then, finally, the ultimate implosion when everyone on the pitch realises in the tournament that nobody has their back and it's every man for himself. Even Roy himself clumsily joked about how Vardy should probably be grateful for any chance to even be around the England setup, let alone actually play in a position that he's familiar with. ("Jamie, you've been in excellent form all season; you've stretched defences, scored goals and created space for all those around you. But I want you to track that right back." Yet at other times, Roy seems genuinely delighted that he's found some sort of magic bullet that can bring his attack to life. It's all rather odd and not particularly conducive to a strong team ethic and performance.
The commentators stated at one point that there was a very good partnership forming between Kane and Vardy. There certainly could be and it's still probably the best asset England have going into this tournament, but their body language looked very tentative to me. Both flicked thumbs up at each other and smiled when the other scored, but there was no warmth there, and no brotherly spirit.
There are still things that can be done with this England team though. The Tottenham core looks strong if they can get their heads back after their season end; Vardy should play up front, Drinkwater should start (although probably won't even make the plane because Roy's willing to overlook Wilshere's deficiencies in defence and lack of fitness), throw in Milner, who's been in good form lately and then work on what you can in central defence and you've got a decent team there:
GK: Hart
RB: Walker
CB: Cahill
CH: Smalling
LB: Rose
DM: Dier
RCM: Milner
LCM: Drinkwater
AM: Alli(/Rooney if we must)
CF: Vardy
CF: Kane
Rest of squad:
Forster
Heaton
Clyne
Stones
Bertrand
Wilshere (may be able to produce something off the bench but shouldn't start because he isn't fit)
Henderson
Lallana
Townsend
Sterling
Rooney
Sturridge
Out:
Delph - What's the point?
Barkley - May be tough but there's too much competition in attacking midfield and Townsend provides a natural wing option.
Rashford - He could be really good but should be allowed to develop outside of the pressure cooker failure-fest that is the England football team for now. One for the future; don't ruin him in the present.
Excellent post, DM - difficult to argue with any of that, although I'd definitely put Barkley in ahead of one of Wilshere/Townsend/Lallana.
I like your team Dunge.
I'd like to keep the experience and quality of Rooney on the pitch and actually think he's got a future in midfield. I might swap Drinkwater for Rooney in your team. Both can pass the ball, but I just think Rooney will be more creative in the final third.
In the squad I'd keep Rashford (as I'm taking Rooney as a midfielder). I'd drop Delph, Sterling (not playing with any form or confidence) and Henderson (we just have better).
Roy has his favourites though so I can't see Drinkwater getting in ahead of the likes of Wilshere and Henderson.
I don't think drinky should start either. He's put in some decent performances but like joby says - he doesn't give you enough in the final third. It's a different set up at Leicester and he always has an out ball for mahrez vardy or Shinji.
We don't counter attack as England and I actually think hendersons range of passing was better last night. If Rooney plays like he did at Wembley then he has to start - he is the captain and he has tournament experience.
Barkley should also be in the squad because of what he can do going forward. He's capable of the spectacular. Milner is a definite no for me, he's a workhorse but he doesn't offer much else.
I'd like the diamond formation with Rooney as the no.10 with Ali on the right and possibly Henderson on the left.
Our back 4 is poor though
I'm not keen on Walker and Rose as defenders, but I think the diamond is reluctantly our best formation and those two offer the necessary width and energy going forward. I think the left and right sides of the diamond need to be decent defensively though, which is one reason why I opt for Drinkwater and Milner there ahead of the likes of Alli or Wilshere. Henderson would be a decent shout too.
Regarding Barkley, I am somewhat reluctant to leave him out because I think he's a decent player; the problem is that I only really see him in one position (central attacking midfielder) and I think he's third or fourth choice there behind Rooney, Alli and possibly Sterling. Essentially, I think he may be taken for the wrong reasons.
I've just read that back and lost count of the number of times I wrote the word "decent" in one post.
Sterling shouldn't in the starting 11 for me. He's had a very indifferent season and was poor last night
I think we mistake last game as a failure when actually it will be a huge learning exercise for Roy.
If he goes in to te Euro's after that and plays Vardy wide in a front 3 then he's an idiot and should be fired.
If he goes in and realises the best chance we have to succeed is playing as we did against Germany and playing an attacking, Counter attacking formation, then last night's game was useful.
Dunge is right when he says we have to play the best formation to get the best out of the squad we've got. We need to pick that and then get it working before the Euro's.
For me, that's what we did against Germany.
Two things are clear now, basically, after the past season and yesterday's game.
1. England's best chance of winning comes with Vardy and Kane both starting, since both are on red-hot form and can complement each other nicely.
2. Vardy has to play as a striker - no use wasting his pace running into defenders from the left wing.
So, it has to be a 2-striker system.
That means a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2.
3-5-2 would be a terrible choice since none of the players are used to playing with a back 3. So it has to be 4-4-2, or a variant thereof.
Roy's used the diamond extensively, so we can assume fairly safely that if (big if) he's following the same logic, we'll see England line up in a 4-4-2 diamond at the Euros.
For me:
Hart
Walker - Smalling - Cahill - Rose
Dier
Rooney - Drinkwater
Alli
Vardy - Kane
Alli has to play as the 10, since that's his position and it's where he works best with Kane. Rooney is moving deeper and deeper and has a better range of passing from deep than Alli anyway. We all know Roy will play Rooney, and for me this is the best place to make use of him if he's a guaranteed starter rather than forcing one of our 3 best attacking players out of position/the team.
Drinkwater's link with Vardy is something that should be exploited - his balls over the top to Vardy could be excellent on the counter.
