Ridiculous call from Hodgson. You can understand wilshere going as he is very good when fit but taking a half fit average Henderson is pointless.
Why pick on Dier? He deserves to go. It's Henderson you should be looking at.
Sorry Spurtle, but if you read the article correctly you will see that I am not picking on Dier I am saying that there is no credible backup for him should he pick up two yellows, which is very possible given his style of play, and the fragility of continental refereeing.
Is Drinkwater particularly good in the Defensive midfielder role? Genuine question
Everybody knows Hodgson has pandered to the big names.
There is no question as to whether it will cost him, it will. Be it an injured defender or a Dier suspension, it's more than likely.

Is Drinkwater particularly good in the Defensive midfielder role? Genuine question

Drinkwater played a slightly different role for Leicester as he was in a two man midfield alongside NGolo Kante. If you look at his stats then he covers and awful lot of ground and tackles relentlessly. He's also a great passer of the ball, which is a pre-requisite for a defensive midfielder. He wouldn't do anything flash, but he'd recycle the ball quickly and keep the momentum of the England side going forwards.
I try not to have blue tinted spectacles on when I judge these things, but I would have taken him as a back up to Dier. I can understand Wilshere getting in as he is a very talented footballer on his day, but to miss out to the likes of Henderson is particularly galling.
Dier never got sent off this season
Drinky did
Drinkwater is very good at the deep midfield role. He protects the back four very well in a similar fashion to how Dier plays. The England defence looked far more solid against Australia in the second half once Drinkwater had moved into that role. The England defence is not great and will be found wanting in this tournament. It needs that deep midfield role protecting the defence and I am sure Dier will provide this. However, there are some physical games in the group stage, especially a "local derby" against Wales and Dier's physical strength may well be penalised leaving the squad will no one to fill that role. Jack Wilshere is far too light weight for this position and is more of an attacking player with his flair and skill.
Eric diet probably wont be playing as his preferred choice is Wilshire. If that's the case then we don't need to take 3 DMs
The biggest problem I have is that he insists on playing JW as a dm when he isn't. Wilshere should be played as an AM or CM. You could then leave Henderson or Barclay out and take dier and dd
I'd have kept Drinkwater and Townsend in the side myself, and left out Henderson and Lallana or Barkley.
Can Milner fill up the DM role if needed?
i think it will be Kane&Vardy up front . Vardy will use his pace expecting a ball over the top which has bought success for Leicester this season supplied by Drinkwater. Wiltshire might be there instead doing a sideway pass which has been the Arsenal way.
If we do play a diamond - and hopefully we will because the players don't look like they know what they're doing in a 4-3-3 - then Dier surely has to play at the base of it. He's big, tough, a ball-winner, and the kind of player that England always look better for having in front of their defence. Unlike Henderson or Milner he looks like he enjoys the role, Drinkwater's tackling was underwhelming at best against Australia to the point where I can totally understand why he was cut and Wilshere will get torn apart in that role against anyone half decent. While he's not the finished product yet, Dier would be one of the first names on my team sheet based on what I'd want from that role and comparisons within the squad. It's a good point about needing to make sure he keeps his discipline and not pick up yellows because that defence is going to need all the help it can get.
Yeah but Drinkwater isn't very good. That's the main issue, hence him not being included.
Thanks for your comment "There'sOnlyOneReds" but this is an adult conversation and it would be better if you just played with your toys or filled in your colouring book. There's a good boy.

These things are subjective, but he did play the whole season in a 2 man central midfield for a team that finished 1st and won the Premier League. Instead RW chooses to take 3 midfield players from a team that finished mid-table.
Subjectivity aside you can understand why people would want to debate the wisdom behind this.

Yeah let's. Which is what happened of course. Even an unfit and out of form Henderson is preferred over Drinkwater, which kind of tells you everything. You can't just bring players because the team they played for won the league. The team was very functional and did an excellent job of winning the league with the players available but this isn't the same. Drinkwater is nowhere near good enough to play for England. Vardy on the only hand has a big role to play coming off the bench when defenders are tiring.

People used to complain about taking players just because their team won the league. Now suddenly the underdogs win the league and a player should go because of it. Reeks of hypocrisy.
Whether Drinkwater is god enough is one debate, but we do know he’s fit and in form.
Can we honestly say the same about Henderson, Barclay, Wilshere and Lallana? Milner admittedly is in form, but just a bit average when he is.
I guess people are calling out Henderson, in particular, because he’s neither good enough, match fit or in form.
"Even an unfit and out of form Henderson is preferred over Drinkwater, which kind of tells you everything."

It kind of seems to tell a lot of people that players are once again being picked on reputation rather than form.

People used to complain about players only going because they played for big/fashionable clubs. This is still happening.
I suppose they have taken Jamie Vardy, but Roy Hodgson is clear to point out at almost every opportunity that he'll play where and when he says and that he should be grateful to even be involved. Even if he was trying to put Vardy back in his place (which he doesn't because it's not Vardy himself who's inciting this argument) , you should never do this in public.
I actually think we could go into this competition with the intent of playing some enjoyable, attacking football with the pressure mostly off and a group of players that the public could get behind. Instead our preparation is once again looking woeful.
