You do not have to play a possession based style to utilise Cesc Fabregas' qualities. Despite being schooled by Barca he's not actually a Barca style player, which showed when he played for them.

Quick transitions and movement off the ball are what suit him best, as his time and Chelsea and Arsenal have shown, as his ability to pick his man out with a through ball is his biggest strength not his ball retention.

Agree with that, but it helps if your team keep the possession. Cesc will be a liability when we don't have the ball. He is very good at spotting forwards run and nine out of ten he gets the ball to them, but he can only do so if time and space is afforded to him. Normally the opposition players are in your face. He will be more effective when there are more tired legs.

It depends on your midfield set up. With you playing three cb's it's less of an issue if the cm's are going looking for the ball.

In a back four I think it's more of an issue. When we've played Herrera deeper instead of Carrick there's been a noticeable difference - Herrera is better at pressing and goes searching for the ball and lacks Carrick's positional discipline/understanding. So while we'll win more tackles in the centre/further up the pitch with Herrera, it's easier to expose the cb's when it's played around him rather than Carrick cutting off the passing lanes and intercepting deeper in our half.

It's a matter of preference really.

But I don't agree Cesc is a liability without the ball. I think it's a myth Chelsea fans come out with to justify their defensive tactics.

Herrera, the Spanish Mason...

He's more like Henderson to be fair.

I just think this Chelsea team will struggle in Europe, and the midfield will be the part of the team most exposed

Edin, do you reckon Coco(aine) Lamela has been doing a Wilshere hence his mysterious injury?

I remember under Mourinho Cesc's defensive abilities were questioned, Sideshow, but he had some of the best defensive statistics in the prem of all cm's.

Darren Cesc doesn't react quick enough to the danger and Cesc is very slow, Matic is too but is more alert to danger. Cesc himself admit that he is not that defensive minded midfielder.

Difference between being a defensive minded midfielder and being a liability.

And as mentioned, is it really necessary to have two defensive midfielders and five defenders?

Personally I am not a fan of using two defensive midfielders especially against lesser sides

Dunno what to think, llm, despite his ridiculous opinions, does have a good knowledge of what is going on in the club. And everyone in the club seems very supportive and almost sad when talking about him so it seems more mental health than drug related. Definitely not an actual injury though.

They could be lying about the surgery, though.

Sideshow, I don't disagree for the bigger games, especially as Cesc usually disappears. But for the rest of the league? It's overkill, in my opinion.

You get results so I guess it doesn't matter so much.

Edin ok wasn't aware of that. Sad if true.

Sad if true, good player though. Spurs will be hoping he will be OK next season, otherwise they will have to write him off

posted on 29/3/17

Yeah I get that, still think he's being wasted, though. Do you think he'll leave in the summer?

With the world cup approaching it won't help his chances sat on Chelsea's bench again. Herrera gets in the squad over him now, ffs!

Oh didn't know about his brother. That's terrible.
