I disagree, none of those cb's are top cb's and Shaw cannot attack. We lack ball players more than ball winners in midfield, Herrera wins the ball as well as any midfielder in the league and has no problems with the physical side, he's just lacking in quality on the ball compared to top midfielders. We also need a replacement for Carrick.

The quality and depth of our attackers is betrer than our defence and central midfield. There's a case to be made for them lacking efficiency, but there's also more room for improvement with those options than there is in the other parts of the side - and getting a good attacking left back, and improving the creativity and control of our midfield could also lead to more goals in our forward line.

I wouldn't say no to top forward player being brought in, but the issues I've mentioned still remain in the squad.

True, your forward line is as good as Chelsea's and Man City's. I am not sure Herrera is that good a recovering the ball, you can certainly upgrade on him. Pobga is meant to be the player who supports your forwards in the attack. I think Rojo has improved recently and Bailly can rush into the challenges, but he has been good overall. Jose likes his lb and rb to defend first and foremost and have the wingers in each side to attack Shaw is not as bad defensively which would good enough for Jose.

That one of Mike Tindall outside of Madeira airport is spot on

Well then you are not watching us play, his ball recovery is one of the best in the league. Under Mourinho he's transformed in this respect, but it's with the ball he's lacking what we need from a truly top cm.

Pogba needs to pull his finger out. But both he and Herrera are expected to support the attack, which is why they push up to support Zlatan.

The cb's have done ok but I'm still not convinced. They're also poor with the ball, which puts even more oressure on the midfield.

Jose may want the full backs to be able to defend but what Shaw's offering evidently isn't enough given his lack of game time.

But we'll see what happens. Mourinho doesn't have much confidence in our left backs so that'll be an area he'll look to strengthen I'm sure.

I always found that Herrera was a bit of a mix between 'Northern steel' and 'Southern flair'. The issue is that he doesn't really excell in either and that the combination of both isn't quite enough to make a big difference.

Don't know if anyone on the United board will remember, but back when they signed him I said something along the lines of his making a decent stop-gap for a couple of years while United put a top-level midfield together, and perhaps a reliable fringe player thereafter. The fact he's starting games consistently now is proof United are at least a year or two behind in their rebuilding process.

Yeah I agree with that, ioag. We've spent so much money on our central midfield since Fergie left but it's still not fixed.

The cornerstone (for the football I like, at any rate) is the regista-like midfielder, the player with the ability to build and dictate from deep. That's who you need to start building your midfield around, imo.

As vital as a top-drawer DM might be, you don't build your MF around him, ditto your wide mids (if you have them) or even your advanced mids.

I don't think United have signed anyone with the right profile in that position.

Yeah I agree, we've been crying out for one for years. Not many about at the top level, though.

No, but surely you could have done better than you have or taken an educated punt on an up-and-coming youngster.

Yeah of course. But in terms of immediate needs for a top midfielder in that mould it's difficult to get one.

posted on 1/4/17

Possibly Daz, but the same need has been there for at least four years.

Yeah and it's criminal that it hasn't been addressed.

At least Mourinho's steadied the ship.

Yeah he really is the special one.

I don't get Utd really, if they signed Weigl which is entirely feasible. They could have had (before one was sold):
Pogba - Schneiderlin
Weigl

Would have possibly been the best midfield in the league.

Tbh, Mourinho is shiiiiit and his negative tactics this season are making him found out.

posted on 2/4/17

Schneiderlin doesn't have the minerals, or ability, to be a top midfielder at a big club.

posted on 2/4/17

I disagree, don't think he was given a proper chance and then was left to stagnate as a player.

posted on 2/4/17

He does rely on playing week in week out though, which is odd for a midfielder.

posted on 2/4/17

He was given a chance, he was just crap.

posted on 2/4/17

I would like Weigel, whether we'd get him is another matter. The German players at Dortmund are a little harder to prize away.
