What's weird is the level of expectation. The Dutch League is poor. Easily as bad as the Championship if not worse. If we'd signed someone like Ross McCormack, who is / was a prolific Championship scorer, you'd all be a bit underwhelmed and wouldn't expect much from him. This is the equivalent. Vincent Janssen, whilst he might have promise as a 21 year old, is still a player who last season did well in a Championship equivalent league. Comparisons to RVN are ridiculous because he was smashing them in in Holland when they were very competitive as a league. Completely different now. Top scorer for one season in the Championship, that's what we've got, don't expect any more.

There's a massive difference between him & soldado
Janssen is a 21 year old kid that was bought as back up
Soldado was a season pro with a incredible scoring record bought to be our number 1 striker.
Really don't like people using it as a comparison
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The sooner he starts scoring goals and not missing good chances the sooner the comparisons will dwindle.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To me it's just lazy talk by fans
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not really any worse than people going overboard with how well he does while still not looking like scoring. Not referring to you by the way Hengy, just in general.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Totally agree. Personally think he's pretty average. Wasn't a player I wanted us to buy as he's totally unproven.
I don't take any notice of his scoring recorded last season as the league is rubbish.
His link up play is pretty good but he's very clumsy at the same time.
Just think throwing out the soldado comparisons is just silly
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe. But with Soldado being the flop that he was and so fresh in the memory, people are understandably going to be anxious about a new striker from another league struggling to score.
Not sure why BenJones is concerned, he is not a purs supporter!
As for Janssen, his totallyifferent to Soldado, wo I alsod a lot of time for.
Jansen is a much stronger player, very good at holding the ball up & also fully aware of were ohers are.
He is also unselfish, and I think once he has assimilated himslf to the pace of the PL, will do very well up front for us

Ross McCormack is a 30 year old with 13 international caps or Scotland !
Janssen is 21 with with 3 goals in 7 games for Holland.
different mustard.
Any 21 year old will take time to adapt in this league.
Especially one who cost £17m (nothing in todays market)
Just look at Son. £22m and not great first season, now with confidence he's on fire. Same can happen for Janssen.
When we bought Soldado we were apparently getting the finished article - a striker in his prime who had scored goals consistently in probably the best league quality-wise.
What we got was a bottle job (in my opinion), who melted when out of his comfort zone.
Janssen does not look like a bottle job to me . Plenty of top strikers took several starts to get off the mark. Henry (8) and Bergkamp (7) are the standout ones.
He is a young man still learning his game. Patience
RvN was not prolific at Janssen's age last season
Jansenn (21 at start of 15/16)
34 games, 27 goals
RvN (21 at start of 1997/98)
31 games, 13 goals
The comparison between Ruud and janssen times are a bit unfair in ruuds time there were better defenders the Dutch league and the Dutch in general churn out awful defenders the last two years. I'm talking the roberto Martinez or Kevin keegan school of defending. Van der horn of Swansea the latest export is league one standard.
The problem with janssen is he is a rookie so he is picking the wrong positions because he is learning the game. He has some cracking attributes but we need someone to rely on and it's unfair on us and unfair on him to rely on him.
You can see already he will not be a top scorer he has not got it that's not something that will change but he will a good forward in time.
Sickening to think lacazette was available for a bit more though. Should of bought both. (I know we don't spend like that just saying)
lacazette is just as unproven as janssen though

Definitely not.
He's scored 20+ goals 3 seasons in a row in a slightly tougher league.
Janssen had just 1 season behind him

plus lacazette would have been much more expensive and probably only gone somewhere he would be number 1 choice… a few years from now we might progress to a club who can make that kind of signing as back up… but not yet, imo.

If we signed messi would he be just as unproven as Janssen because he's not played in the prem?
Agreed he'd cost a bomb though £40m+ probably and would be looking to be number 1 although he & Kane are more suited to play together than Janssen & Kane.
Hopefully Janssen can learn quickly on the job and Kane comes back fresh and ready to go again in December
Lacazette is 25 though, so obviously has more experience at first team level.
I go back to performance at age.
Janssen was 21 at the start of last season.
When Lacazette was 21, he went on to score only 3 goals in 27 starts in 2012/13.
To score that many goals at Janssen's age bodes well, despite the standard being lower.
The problem is if Janssen came through academy ( i.e. Harrison ) at this age no one would expect anything from him but because he cost £15m+ there's more expectation on him especially now Kane's injured.
Reckon he'll get 10 > 14 goals this season
I think Janssen just needs time, he has shown some impressive glimpses and will improve as time and the games go on.
This run of games should do him a world of good, I think at present he is trying too hard in front of goal, he is snatching at shots rather than relaxing and striking the ball cleanly. Who knows how good he can become, but he still has improving to do, as always time will tell and its way too early to judge him.

Remember what a donkey Harry Kane looked a few years back? Come on guys let's give him time. I think he needs to be a bit more ruthless and get himself into better positions as he looks a little lost at times which was pointed out by Ruud gullit on motd last night. Good thing is his hold up play and work rate is fantastic.

Definitely give him time you're right Don.
Like i put I didn't want him in first place as think he's too clumsy but I'll give him and poch time to get him to a level we need him.
His link up has been better than I thought so he's already exceeded my expectations.
Just looks to me he needs to get into shape and with all the games coming up he'll get there quickly.
Nothing better than when a player proves your early opinion wrong like Lamela did to me
im backing him to put away 15 goals this season and prove the doubters wrong.
he looks older than he is, but need to remember he's really still young, new team new league new country new style of playing.
he brings other players into play very well and its benefitting our high scoring attacking mids. the goals will come
I put between 10>14 goals
