How the hell has Southgate landed the England job, even if it is interim
He shouldn't be anywhere near it, complete turkey
Bottled it his first responsibility. He won't last long.
He's hardly going to endear himself to the FA if he strips their biggest money maker of the captaincy as his first move
As if he was going to strip him of the captaincy.
This is why I give up with our national team. I'd lose the will to live if I supported UTD. Has no one got the balls to tell Rooney to feck off?

No point selling our souls for a fancy foreign name, mate. He's honest, hard-working, passionate and completely moral.
Just like all British managers
I don't know who they'd make captain instead really.
Fkn joke! He has an opportunity to make a real statement and fails. Get rid..
Imagine being piiiiiissed off that interim coach Gareth Southgate didn't strip Rooney of the captaincy.
You're deluded if you ever thought that was gonna happen.
People expected anything different?
I really fancy Scotlands chances of winning now!
I wouldn't expect Southgate to appoint a new captain (more appropriate to wait for the new mananger to do that) but he should be able to not play Rooney.
If Rooney starts then Southgate should be hounded out.
As Robbing says, who else is going to be captain?
There's not much personality in there, or guaranteed starters.
The only contenders would be:
Hart - Had a poor Euros, ditched by Man City, and is under more pressure for his place than in recent years.
Cahill - Out of from at club level and has never been great for England either. Might not even start with Stones and Smalling possibly preferred.
Henderson - Is at least a club captain but has only just returned to anything like good form in the last couple of games.
They are only the 3 contenders, and none of them are a particularly compelling case.

Stuart Pearce made Scot Parker England captain when it was supposed to be Gerrard after Capello was sacked. This was a great opportunity for Southgate to show he means business but bottled it.
Loads of options with players like Hart, Cahill, Hendo, Lallana or even someone like Eric Dier. Can't use the who else do we have excuse.
Yeah, I'd just give it to Eric Dier. Established in the team with no real competition for his place and has captained England at youth levels I believe.
Loads of options
Do me a favour.

Apart from Eric Dier, it's questionable whether any of those others deserve to start, let alone be made captain.
Lallana has been England's best player in 2016, so that's definitely not questionable, and as an experienced player and former club captain he would be much more likely to get it than Dier.
Not that it matters.
He's done ok, but would or should he get the nod on the wing over Walcott or Sterling?
If you play Rashford then you don't need both Walcott and Sterling. Lallana offers a lot more than raw pace. He leads the forward press and is a skillful two footed player which is rare for England. He's finally starting to add goals to his game and will easily be above both Sterling and Walnut.

Why on Earth would an interim manager strip the captaincy and give it to someone else when he's only going to be there a few months?
Sure I don't think he should have it long term but right now the FA just need the ship at least a little steadier.
There's no obvious alternative either.
