Newcastle United 2 - 3 Chelsea
Scorers: Suarez x2 (Pjanic, Direct FK); Aguero x2 (Sanchez x2), Dybala (Neymar)
MotM: Sanchez
A game between two terrific attacks and strong midfields produced a predictably electrifying match up that produced plenty of action throughout. Newcastle stood toe to toe with the reigning champions, often outhustling them in the centre of the pitch and dictating the tempo of the game. Their key man today was, as always, Luis Suarez - whose pure striking instinct kept Chelsea's back 4 on their toes all game. Coupled with two direct wingers and the genius of Pjanic resulted in an afternoon Chelsea's defence would rather forget.
Up at the other end of the pitch, Chelsea faired much better, with Alexis Sanchez causing the young full back Wendell all manner of problems on the right hand side of the pitch. The rest of Newcastle's experienced defence remained resolute for large parts of the game but the success that Sanchez was having instigated nearly every dangerous attack that Chelsea came up with.
In what was a very even encounter, the final blow came late on, cruelly for Newcastle it must be said, with the substitute Dybala combining well with Neymar to create a yard of space in the area, before drilling a low ball across the face of goal that Buffon could not get down quick enough to prevent. A tough pill for Newcastle to swallow but elation for Chelsea.
Stoke 2-1 Wolves
Goals:
Benzema (Ribery) Kovacevic (Wilshere)
Hernandez (Walcott)
Close game this by 2 improving sides - think Stoke's 4-3-3 was well set-up to counter the 4-2-3-1. Home advantage I think was key
MOTM - Benzema, led the line well and was a right handful for the Wolves back-line
