recall Poch playing CCV and Toby together in pre-season, two right footers, fair points HRH but i'll never get the footed thing at all
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Didnt Wimmer get injured, and Vertonghen was still out from the Euros?
One thing a laidback preseason friendly, quite another a CL tie
----------------------------------------------------------------------
could you not agree that Wimmer has shown more than Carter-Vickers and Dier as a central defender?
therefore the point of laid back friendly is irrelevant cause you want you best options in your big games.
If this is Poch's way I trust it, I just hope Wimmer stays at the club cause I can see him having a good future

"lets take the pouint further. CCV comes in for a Dier injury, and gets sent off first game... the model that you are suggesting poch uses, the player that would then become first choice is some academy centre back, and wimmer would still be on the bench?
not convinced."
I am not suggesting a model for Poch to use.
I am explaining the model Poch DOES use
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the model you have suggested that he uses... all be it with a fair amount of evidence so far...
but I am sure you can see by my above scenario that sooner or later this particular model just becomes nonsense.

I am not suggesting he should do anything, I am explaining what I understand to be the thinking behind what he has done.
Would CCV play ahead of Wimmer in the absence of Dier and Toby?
I think we know the answer to this - CCV has been on the bench instead of Wimmer, even with Dier in the matchday squad, so it is a yes.
It just so happens I agree with Poch's logic.
As I referenced earlier, England tried to replicate Spurs in the Summer, but instead of a comfortable leftfooter on Rose's side, he had two rightfooted centrebacks clumsily attempting to play a ball in to his path.
An example - if you have a freekick on the left of the box, and want to go top right corner, a rightfooter will have more chance of getting it on target. The leftfooter will always have to go across the face of the keeper to get it there, and the ball is always trying to veer away from the goal.
This is pretty much how I see the relationship between the centeback and the fullback on his side. On your correct foot you have much more chance of finding your man - you can play it outside of the crowd and the ball will try and stay in play, as opposed to playing it in to traffic and it always trying to veer laterally and out of play.
Also, when the centreback split, as we do, I want it to be natural to take a touch away from their goal when attempting playing a ball, instead of having to cut inside to do so.
Simplistic maybe, just the way I see it.

yeah but that's only not ridiculous if CCV is ready for first team action.
if hes not yet ready then that is just foolish.
so again to be a bit of a caaant, suppose we had the best two centre backs in the world in our squad, both left footed, and the only other fit option was an academy boy who had never played in the first team, but he was right footed, you wouldn't play the two left footers together, so you would leave the second best centre back in the world on the bench, in favour of the right footed academy boy?
extreme I know, but this is what you seem to be suggesting.
cannot help but disagree.
I get the right foot/left foot thought process. To an extent...
Barca are the team when it comes to defenders bringing the ball out of defence. Yet they went from 2008-2014 without a regular leftie.
Puyol
Marquez
Pique
Mascherano
It wasn't until they bought Mathieu and Vermaelen - neither of who were/are first choice - came in that they rectified it. Are there that few defenders who can control and pass the ball on their weaker foot?

I love MoPo honestly, but it's a massive slap in the face for a player not to get picked purely because he's the wrong foot.
How on earth can this take precedence over defensive qualities.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If Walker got injured, Ben Davies would not expect to get the rightback place for this very reasom
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Completely different for full backs as they have much less room to use the other foot.
Two right footed CBs alongside each other is fine
Two left footers... hmmm I'm not sure it would work, as lefties are more one-footed generally. Has there ever been a successful left-footed CB partnership?
To be fair to Wimmer he was injured for a period and is trying to get back into the squad.
last time he played i think was for austria he played at left back which he can play there.
He is a weird one like i think he is dependable but he must be nothing special.
Was only ever third choice for Cologne.
He gets in our side and does a job a good one but does not keep his place.
Austria have some good defenders but he never ever breaks into their team even in the euros they used every other defender before him despite having dragovic dismissed in the first game.
He played left back cos they had nobody else recently.
If he is that highly rated why has he never had an extended period of games? anywhere?

Started in all 32 of his league appearances in 14/15.

In those extraordinarily unlikely circumstance, there would of course be an exception.
This is an extreme example which really has little relevance to our squad as we do not have two of the best centrebacks on the planet.
I imagine Poch, like everyone else, sees Alderweireld as our standout player there
Past that, there is not much to choose between all of the others. Wimmer is rated higher than Jan by some, Jan is in the side, CCV is making benches ahead of Wimmer.
Given the choice of a marginally better player (arguably), Poch clearly believes that having a rightfooter there is more important
Gents an artcle in the Metro suggests that HRH is right in what he thinks poch's reasoning Is for not selecting wimmer. Poch says in his own words that it is due to balance in the 18 he could pick, he felt that Dier and CCV are better suited to covering Aldy. With Davies able to cover both LB and LCB. He also states that if a player is no longer in his plans he will inform the player immediately and then inform the media. He statrs that Wimmer IS in his plans.
