I remember hearing, around the tome of his appointment, that Souness wanted to stamp his mark on the squad and that's why he got rid of quite a few players en masse. It was obvious the squad was ageing but I don't think so many changes needed making as quickly as he did.

He did say that didn't he. Foolish imo. Like Klopp has this summer; Assessed what he's got, filled the gaps and adapted the squad to his methods.

yeah he's said it himself feet dude that he changed too much too quickly, especially getting rid of experienced players who still had lots to offer like Houghton, Staunton and didn't Beardsley go to Newcastle I think early enough under Souness?

Only thing Souness got right was signing Rob Jones.

Beardsley went to the BS before going back to Newcastle in 91. But yeah it was early in Souness' reign.

I can't help thinking our period of dominance in the league would've continued a few seasons longer had so many changes not been made. Especially considering the young players, Fowler, McManaman, Redknapp, Owen et al we had coming through.

Ahyeah of course he went there first, terrible move from Souness that as Beardsley had several good season after leaving us.

Good point too with the crop of young lads coming through.

We really missed a trick commercially in the 90s and hats off to united for seeing that angle and using their brand to build the commercial side, we could have doen the same.

I hate saying this but there are similarities between Souness coming in and Moyes going to Utd after Fergie stepped down. Is it just a natural process, that teams dominate for a period but the well inevitably runs dry?

Yeah agree feet dude there is some striking similaraties, was talking about this on another thread a while back with the reasonable united lads and while they have a point in sayin united now do have the money to buy there way out of trouble I pointed out that in the 90s so did we when compared to toher clubsm we still spent loads but bad buys, bad managerial appointments all led to our downturn, Evans nearly had it, and hsi side that challenged was a very good team, but missing out on the title sort of broke that team, and the 95 cup final too.

This all day long.

It was one of our greatest failures. At the time we were arguably the bigger club due to recent success. Had we capitalised on our global following at the time, we may have enjoyed a few more league titles.

By not doing so we have been playing catch up to United from a commercial sense ever since.

The desire to stay attached to the bootroom was another reason. It had been so successful for so long but football did change in the 90's and we simply didn't have the people at the club who could see this happening at the time.

In terms of purley the football side we still had plenty iof brilliant people but the 90s saw that that wasn't enough anymore, you needed to have more and more cash to really challenge and we stayed with the bootroom philosophy for a few years too many.

Still that Evans side was great at times.

Replacing Beardsley for Saunders was a huge mistake. We should have kept Beardsley but I also recall that Sounes turned down the chance to buy Ian Wright who would have been a great signing.

The other shocking buy was Paul Stewart who probably still now makes Balotelli look like a decent signing.

If u read the article u see that a lot of the players left in 91. Why??**

Most of them were 'past it' by 91
