I also remember reading an interview with Keith Allen (think it was in 442), who spent time with the team in Italy after the New Order song was released... he said the players treated Bobby with little or no respect, Lineker being bar far the worst in ripping him behind his back
.......................................
I read that interview as well, I think it was in Four Four Two.
Allen was saying they threw Robson in the swimming pool in his full England suit and as he was flailing around, struggling to get out, the players just walked off laughing, they also threw bread rolls at him when he was giving a pre-meal speech.
Of course, its just Allen's word, but there's no reason for him to lie, and it does sound like the type of thing footballers would do IMO.
England are an average football nation who are about as successful as Uruguay on the international stage, we're still arrogant as well despite having done very little to justify it.
I agree with Spurtle
People (especially in the media) make out that the England team would benefit from having less overseas players, more "home grown" players, we've never been that good, even when we had loads of English players in the league.
We are nowhere near as successful as Uruguay.
We were rubbish from 72-84 when we routinely had the best teams in Europe in the most competitive league, usually full of British players and managers/coaches.
It's the FA that are the problem, they have always been behind the times, too safe and stuck in their ways.

This.
Haven't they only just introduced smaller size pitches for youngsters, 40 years after other countries started doing it?
The FA have been arrogant, stubborn and too stuck in tradition.
England have good players, not the best but certainly enough to compete. The problem is the coaching/management/mentality and that's been the case for a long time.
I'd blame our philistine football culture, lack of emphasis on technique and tactical awareness in youth coaching, lack of trained coaches, and the great sell-off of playing fields before I blamed the number of foreign footballers in the league.

Yes, Arsenal started the rot by filling their team full of foreign players.
I think it was Spurs who were first, signing,Ardiles and Villa, from Argentina, started the rot they did.

England were alright until West Ham stopped producing world class players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you are admitting that West Ham haven't had any world class players for ages? I agree.

I know what you mean. The other day when I was in the park with my son we watched a bit of a kids game. The coaches and kids all seemed to want to see a little bit of skill. There was no positioning sense, not one decent pass or run into space so they could be passed to by their not very good at passing team mates. It was awful.

In my head I thought they'd won the WC once in 1930, just looked at their honours as a nation
Two WC's and 15 Copa America's, Uruguay sh*t all over England
For every time the word, "England" features in this article, none of which I challenge, please substitute the word, "Scotland".
Then it looks a whole lot worse.
