It's nonsense to suggest he wasn't amoung the very best players to have ever played in England
Yes there are many United's. But you can be pretty sure that when we say United on our board we are not referring to Colchester, Leeds or West Ham.

He'd make my bench in all time pl team so I would say he's easily one of best.
It's on the Manchester United board. And apologies, but for me there is only one City and one United (as I'm sure there's only one City and Rovers for people from
Bristol).
Kneerash
Was he among the greats like Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, George Best, Kenny Dalglish etc.
No, he was in the group below.
I'd argue he was, players are judged in their era mostly, comparing players from different eras can be difficult.
Gerard has been referred to as one the very best by far too many proper football players past and present for him not to be spoken of as a true great
He was a good player, too many Hollywood passes in the last few seasons tho & he should have arguably left to further his career
You could argue it.
You would have trouble winning.
There's nothing wrong with Gerard being in the same bracket as Giggs, Beckham and company.
Not a great player for England by any metric - just a good International player.
However, for Liverpool he was simply sensational. Up there with the pantheon of Liverpool greats.
Klopp doesn't rate him...
Journo : Where would you rate Stephen Gerrard is he amongst the worlds top players?
Klopp : I'm the wrong person to ask. How many are involved. Is Pele involved is Franz Beckenbauer involved? Johan Cruyff? Where should I start where should I end? Stop using me to write stories about Gerrard. I like him as a person but I don't know him.

A Liverpool icon but not a PL great for me. I hope he gives management a shot as I think he'll do a good job. Too many of the top players choosing other routes these days
Really Elvis?
Don't want to be attrition al but the second highest scoring midfielder (16th total) and tenth most appearances in Premier league history would not be a Premier League great?
I'm not wrong vc and the football world agrees with me.
He'd play beside any player you mention and not look out of place
On paper you'd think that Gerrard will have what it takes to be a good manager.
Doesn't always work out though, look no further than the epic embarrassing failure of Gary Neville last season.
It should come as a warning to him he needs to take time to really think carefully about what should be his next move and not rush into things. Personally think working as an understudy for a couple of years initially to get some experience is best for him.
Really hope he doesn't get tempted by BT to waste his time talking crap on a weekly basis like Scholes and Owen and Ferdinand, he's a lot better than that.
Gerrard is a Liverpool legend and certainly belongs in the top 5 list of Liverpool's greatest ever players.
Personally I would place Dalglish, Souness and Rush above him, but that's just my opinion as an older geezer who remembers just how great the team was in those days.

And I'd maybe agree but Gerrard played his best football when he had better players around him. I don't think he would have looked out of place in any of the great sides. Gerrard next to Souness would have been ridiculous.

Isn't that a touch myopic though? It's an individual appraisal in a team game or are you saying that he didn't have the quality to play in a Prem winning side?

Ha some of the gash that has a premier league medal... it doesn't mean anything.
I get where Elvis is coming from and there will be plenty who agree (I suspect most will be Utd fans though) but I do find it myopic. I reckon most neutrals would say he is.

Always felt he was a tad over rated tbh.
Reminded me a bit if adnan under Moyes, basically the dross around him made him look great
Great player for LFC but wouldn't be in top 10 outside of LFC
