Kanye's true genius is in his production, much like Dre.

I hear this a lot, what do you mean by production?
Making the beats etc?
Kanye hasn't had a bad album imo, and all have their own distinct sound. He's probably the only one still around from the era he brought through college dropout.
Along with Jay and Em, Ye is definitely one of the oldies with strong relevancy with today's hip-hop scene in terms of sales.

Deacon Blue
For me you have nas, J.Cole, Kendrick, Jay, 2pac, Biggie, Rakim and a few others but sheer ability em is the best MC there has been.
Even when his albums havnt been great, his verses in yelawolfs best friend, dr.dres album, his recent several minute rap, his verses on the shady anniversary(detroit vs everybody) are some of the most ridiculous verses i've ever heard.
So complex, quick, with stories and jokes amidst them.
The best friend verse is one of the best storytelling and well thought out verses i've ever heard.
Grandmaster flash
Big Pun
Biggy
Mobb Deep
The Alkohiks
KRS One
Slick Rick
EPMD
Eric B & Rakim
Pete Rock
Big daddy Kane
The Pharcyde
Common
Gang Starr
Method man
Tribe called quest
Rakim
IMO Run DMC aren't up there in the top bracket; I absolutely love them & their place in the chronology of things has them down as true pioneers alongside Public Enemy etc. I just don't think they're particularly good as wordsmiths and cannot, therefore, be included in with the very best.
My all-time favourites:
Eminem (first three albums (and infinite/Rawkus beforehand) are incredible - garbage after that)
Biggie
Nas
A Tribe Called Quest (new album is great too)
Jurassic 5
De La Soul
Rakim
Big L
Wu Tang (especially Meth & ODB)
I'm not his biggest fan but probably Jay
Dre & Kanye for their production ability alone - not in love with their respective latest efforts
Andre 3000 <3
Chance & Vic Mensah are ones to watch and I like Anderson Paak but I'm not entirely convinced he's 'hip hop'
You have MMLP, Slim Shady LP,Eminem Show and Encore...and recovery.
Add that to his features.
Renegade, forever, best friend, guilty conscience, whats the difference, drop the world, doctors orders(forgot the song), dont know, patiently waiting, etc. Just ridiculous verses when he features on someones tracks
Patiently Waiting for me is one of his best verses.
Current Em can never flow like that...where he just floats on a beat. Think Renegade and stuff.
Current Em wants to fit too many syllables per bar and rip apart the track but is very off beat...I prefer the one that floated on tracks.
Listen to best friend, perfectly on beat with every line.
God please can you arm me with the armout to calm me...etc
Also if you listen to Falva Flav...he'll say that Public Enemy & Run DMC are hip hop....everyone else after that is rap.
Regarding Em, I'd say he has a habit of producing his utter peak (which for me eclipses the peak of any of the other's we've mentioned) when featuring on other people's tracks - Renegade and Patiently Waiting being the best for me; his verse in Hellbound too.

He does great on his own production cos he knows his strengths.
Can you imagine Em on a soulful beat...he's not very diverse.
public enemy bit before my time, so when I did listen to them as a teen I struggled big time.
Think it's hard to go back and realise what was innovative at the time.
There's people like pac and nas who seem timeless though.
Also no-one mentioned Chocolate Droppa

beats are a big part of it, for hiphop production, but he is also a master at manipulating sound... His voice being the most obvious, but also the way he distorts samples, keys etc ... his use of the vocoder is well known, but he also uses things like harmonizer to use his voice to mess around with the instruments on the track.
"Runaway" is a good example.... the last minute or so sounds like a distorted guitar or maybe organ... but then you start hearing little bits of his breath, then more of his vocal and you realise that the vocal is what is creating the sound (then pitchshifted via keyboard and sent through all kinds of effects).
Kanye also doesnt play any instruments...he's just magical on the boards.
Firmino,
I'm not suggesting Em's solo stuff is weak - his first two albums are among the very best in hip hop and his third isn't far away at all - and perhaps it's just because you have a direct comparative preceding/succeeding his mic time but I can't think of a verse as potent as the few I've mentioned on a solo track. Having said that, I can't remember the last time I listened to his first three records from front to cover so I could be mistaken.
I think he learnt alot from his time with rick ruben (who deserves a mention on any hiphop thread!).
He really helped get something magic down on Yeezus. Bringing in the like of Justin from bon Iver are also genius production choices.
