The USSR was dominant in sport, then the breakup and Russia isn't nearly the force USSR was. Is England a country or is the UK a country? A combined UK team that worked together for a good period of time would be better than England, look at how well Wales has done, and England would have benefitted by Welsh players like Bale. What other country splits itself up in pieces for sporting events? Sorry to spoil the theme of the post but this really irks me to no end. End of rant, oh, and why can't we use the Colonial players?

Comments like this really Irk me. Th UK isn't a country it's a union of countries, therefore your argument is a non-runner. Sometimes I have to laugh at the English, it's like when Andy Murray was a pretty unknown quantity he was Scottish in the mainstream media, he wins a few titles and suddenly everywhere he is British. England fans can't slay other home nations for not making tournaments in the past, then suddenly when they are out performing you lot you suddenly want to take Bale et al to the English national team

We've failed using the tried and tested managers, so why not give someone with fresh ideas a chance? He's done a good enough job with the U21s.

Sorry but have to disagree with this especially as I keep hearing this argument used.

Under Sven we actually did rather well or probably about as well as can be expected of England, ie World Cup quarter finals.

Capello's record as England manager was also good apart from that strange World Cup in South Africa where our supposed best players like Rooney just didn't turn up at all.

It's actually under English managers in recent history where we've too often been poor and fallen short - Keegan, McLaren and Hodgson to name a few.

Not sure why we're expecting Southgate to be any different than his previous English predecessors. What is this based on exactly? His record at club level doesn't say much at all.

Are players that are managed by the likes of Guardiola, Conte, Mourinho and Klopp really going to listen to or have much respect for Gareth Southgate?

Sven massively underachieved with the options he had at his disposal. That squad should've been making Semi-Finals of the Euros without a doubt.

We are crap so pointless wasting mega money on anyone else

He simply cannot be worse than Woy so its all a step forward!
