Give it a few years, Rilee Rossouw will be a part of that England middle order.

Why would Abbott leave though? he's mad!

More money with Hampshire.

Jeez he was doing pretty well with SA in the test team I he absence of Steyn. This will be a loss for them as he's a quality bowler and excellent backup.

posted on 6/1/17

To be honest, he was always going to be second fiddle once Steyn was back. Unless they're playing in SA, they probably wouldn't go into a game with 4 seamers. I'd imagine he's behind Steyn, Philander & Rabada in the pecking order. So you can see why he's decided to move.

Money motivation. 100k contract a year for 3 years is much more than what SA pay him.

agree 100% with the OP

why is it that England and the ECB constantly bend the qualification rules unlike any other test playing nation.

fortunately for South Africa they have plenty of loyal homegrown talent like steyn, philander and imran tahir.

He said he would have earned the same if he stayed on SA though.

Then it's it's a even more baffling decision. He would have T20 contracts all over the world and made much more than he will get at Hampshire.

"Steals"?

As for playing for England, I understand he'd have to wait 7 years and Abbott's 29 at the moment....

posted on 7/1/17

nothing to do with ECB or future switch to England. all to do with financial safety and moving out of SA I would guess.

Kash, don't forget the UK are due to leave the EU. Once that happens, the Kolpak ruling will no longer apply to the UK which is why he's going now.

South Africa could offer him any guarantees. When Steyn comes back, Abott's gone again. At least he gets good money for three years playing in England and, if he does well enough, maybe a few years after that.

You'd all do the same.

SA captain, Faf du Plessis, requested his cricket board to be more vigilant regarding players concerns to prevent more Kolpak departures. Obviously there are issues for sure in such circumstances if he is so bothered!!

Hang on you take a dig at the English game because a couple of under paid South African, let's face it, fringe players decide to further their livelihood by joining an English side???

What's that got to do with non English borns playing for England? The qualification period is 7 years.

In a world where we have mindless idiots voting for these borderline race hate parties, more idiots voting to leave the EU because they think it will stop Eastern Europeans and refugees entering the country, I would have thought some of the Asian heritage people on here would be a bit more understanding of a multi cultural society.

Don't tell me you all voted to UKIP and also to leave...?

Serial,

I understand your opinion but it's obvious that SA captain is very concerned about such situations.. These issues have come up before too.

Now I don't live in U.K. & not involved in any politics there and may be this forum may not be right to discuss. Personally I don't mind but don't know about other folks or mods.. However, as I live in U.S so my priority would be for our country n safety. Love it as it has given me a lot and is my Motherland..

Has he said he wants to play for England??

If he moved to earn more money and have, what thinks is a better life, I can't see an issue with this.

posted on 7/1/17

We all agree that everyone deserves to make the best for their livelihood but countries like Ireland suffer a lot more due to such issues. SA is lucky to have the talent pool but still their captain is heavily concerned. So what would be the solution my friends?

He should be able to play for Hampshire and still represent SA?

posted on 8/1/17

I don't mind if he represents Hampshire but not England. He may continue to represent SA if he gets the opportunity..

posted on 8/1/17

He isn't going to play for England. He's 29 and he's moved to Hampshire because they can offer him security for 4 years.

I'm not sure why you have decided to bring non englishborns playing for England into the same context in your article.

posted on 8/1/17

he isn't moving to take up a place in the England side.

he's nearly 30 and only has 11 tests to his name.

he's a good fast bowler but not proven world class. he wouldn't get in the side ahead of broad, and doesn't fit England's preferred model of a 3rd paceman who can bat a bit.

his bowling figures are not much better than woakes who is two years his younger. and woakes averages 23 more with the bat.

England have a lot of younger pace bowlers with potential

abbot would be 36 by the time he qualified to play for England

this is a non story from an ECB point of view. it might be a worry for SA but I don't really think it will change much over there. but some of the anti England/ECB comments above are just stupid.

What gets me is we have an uneducated article created to take a dig at the ECB and englands decisions to pick relevant non English born players.

Yet there's no criticism of the IPL which has also seen players turn their backs on their countries and has set the tone for these T20 mercenaries.

It's a joke that talentless players like Kieron Pollard are millionaires because they can whack a couple of sixes and then get out...

I know he's only played 11 test but his average of 22 is pretty good.
