Before cinci makes a fool of himself for a few more years misunderstanding this issue should we point out to him that having possession is not what gives success, its that being able to afford the best players means having players more capable of passing to each other than lower quality players so these clubs tend to have higher possession stats.
If we sent out Eggert Jonsson, Leon Clarke and Siggy and told them to focus on keeping possession of the ball, would we beat a team that contained Messi, Suarez and Neymar who were sent out to adopt hoofball tactics? I suspect not

Too late for Cinci to change his spots, but you've pretty well summed it up. Too many people with a train-spotter mentality cling to stats, without realising that much of the beautiful game can't be analysed too intently. Not all qualities of a player can be judged by how many passes or tackles he makes.

If you didn't know better you would just assume that better players just pass a ball better and better managers just utilise those talents.
