Clearly there wouldn't be as much quality in the league, and I don't know if it would help the national team as much as some people think either.

incidentally...............strange question just entered my head.

If that rule still existed in European competition and assuming Swansea still won the League Cup in 2013, how would that ruling have affected them?

Was just thinking about swansea. They'd have to fill their team full of foreigners to be able to play in the premier league.

Bar a couple of reserves... Not the worst team in the world.

You may think that the quality of football in the premier league may suffer as you can't bring in as many top players as possible, but possibly a knock on effect could be smaller teams and also leagues having greater access to better foreign players, rather than all the better foreigners being concentrated into just the top teams/leagues.

While the old rules are harsh, I do not think some sort of cap would necessarily be.

The squad could probably be limited to 15 Non HG players in it. Teams in other countries comfortably manage this without any caps on numbers, and we are almost there now anyway.

The ridiculous rule about what constitutes HG should be changed. Fabregas is HG, English-born England regular Dier is not. It should be based on parents nationality, your place of birth, or who you play for internationally if you are capped.

Rather than a set limit per game, there could be a limit across the season - injuries etc may mean you have several players out at once. Say an average of 4 English appearances per game, sub or start, minimum 20 mins.

Not hard to implement, and there still could be a majority of foreign players in the league.

All that may be unpalatable to some, but there is one thing I would be very keen to see:

You should be able to field as many extra players on the bench as you wish.

The caveat is they must be from your academy, under 21, and with less than 20 first team appearances.

There is a 4th substitution allowed, but only if it is one of these players coming on

I think there needs to be something done. 6 may be too much but I think any team that fields 11 foreigners at once they should be deducted pts.

I know Arsenal have been fielding foreign 11's recently with Walcott on the periphery of the team.

I'd stop going to United if we lost our British and English identity entirely.

Not bad that at all Ji.

We'd also have the likes of Johnstone, Ro-Shaun, Tuanzebe, CBJ, Goss, Willock, Harrop, Mitchell and Wilson for the bench.

It'd make the premier league a lot worse, that's for sure.

Mig/Karius

Clyne
Matip
Lovren
Milner

Hendo
Alexander Arnold
Lallana

Coutinho
Sturridge
Mane

Still a strong team for us with only Trent Alexander Arnold untested at 18 (but very highly regarded). Also the likes of Ings, Woodburn, Ejaria, Ojo available.

Five foreigners maximum per match day XI.

And what defines someone as "foreign" is their passport.

As things stand, it is just Mercenary XI versus Mercenary XI. There is virtually nothing left about Arsenal, Man City, etc.. that is English!!

Do you honestly think that the likes of Jenkinson at Arsenal will become world class because Koscielny has been deported?

I do wonder what effect it'd have in terms of more English players having the opportunity to work with the top coaches at the top clubs.

But then I guess there wouldn't be as many top coaches at the top clubs if the prem was limited like this as it'd lose a lot of its appeal.
