Fabregas will retire with an insane assist to game record in the PL but with less trophies than he probably should have won

Riquelme is a legend to me but his career is a little bit messy when you look at it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the few players that blurs the lines people are debating in the article.

At the end of the day, we will most likely remember your Fabregas & Silva's for the really talented players that they were. However if future generations have to read back, it will be like me reading up on Pele. I can respect the man is football's icon but I cant talk about him in the way that i can speak about a Owen, Torres or Suarez.

Fabregas couldn't even make an impact at a Barca side ready made for him. Granted he had Iniesta and Xavi in his positions, but that is damning in itself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yes very damning not starting in a team that had the two best midfielders on the last 20 years in their team

We probably have very different initial thoughts on Torres

Rooney will go down in history as England and man Utd's top scorer

Drogba is a Chelsea/African/PL legend but think Rooney will have far more longevity in the history books
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In terms of what? Drogba scored in about 10 finals, and scored the winning pen in a CL final to win his club their first champions league...

Yeah the final record/performances is the main thing that makes him stand out from his peers Nick but I see what Analog is saying about holding the goal records for Utd and England - even if I don't agree with the overall assessment

I just think in 20/30 years the average football fan will remember Rooney more than Drogba

Plenty of players have scored winning CL goals. Only Rooney is the top scorer for England and the biggest club in England

Although those things dont make Rooney more of a legend that Charlton do they even though he no longer holds either record

Are we are going purely on who people remember?

Bale for the in the making category

Charlton isn't by definition a bigger legend than Rooney, he's just been known as one for far longer, Rooney is still playing which clouds people's judgement

It's kinda subjective tbh tho

'It's kinda subjective tbh tho '

Should be posted on 90% of threads on this site

The world cup win is what separates them tbh in my mind.

Yeah good point

I doubt you will have standouts aside from Messi or Ronaldo due to the oversaturation of football nowadays. When remembering players from previous generations, there tends to be a bit of rose tinted specs as they forget the periods in games where they made mistakes and their faults weren't highlighted as much as they are nowadays.

For United fans, rather than football fans more widely, as well as Rooney and Zlatan, Carrick will be remembered as a legend.

DDG, Pogba and Rashford all have the potential to be years down the line.

PL legends is an easier question as im sure many of us aren't familiar with how some players are received/thought of on the continent

Philip Lahm, has there been a fullback that has consistently played at the level he has over the years for both club and country. Been one of the best fullbacks his entire career. Been at Bayern his whole career also, legend for his ability and without doubt a Bayern Icon

Bit left field but Robbie Keane.

Record breaker for country, impressive haul in the PL. Also a bit of a trailblazer, alongside Becks, in making the MLS successful.

Players I could see myself talking about 30 years from now. List is not complete, just going off the top of my head.

Ronaldo and Messi: Locked
Arjen Robben. So predictable yet no one can stop him.
Buffon: The greatest GK in this generation
Modric, Xavi, Iniesta: Greatest midfielders I've ever seen
Miroslave Klose/Schweinsteiger: all time greats on a dominating international teams.

United players: Based on my bias though. To me, even John O'Shea is a legend to me.

Has Ronaldinho finally retired?

Because if not he's at the top of my list

David Villa was the most lethal strikers I've ever seen before he got hurt. Not legendary to a lot of people but he's legendary in my books.

The likes of O'Shea, Brown, Fletch, are more cult heroes for me, rather than legends or having iconic status.

Of the modern era I think Giggsy and Scholes, Gerrard, Terry, Rio will go down as greats, I'd take either of JT or Rio in my team over Ramos ALL.DAY.LONG.

Good shout with Robben btw he's been brilliant but it's a shame he's had his problems with injury though.

A bit left field, Petr Cech, one of the great PL keepers, CL winner, also had a huge hand...in Chelsea winning it.

neymar needs to step out of messi's shadow before he gets proper recognition.

it's difficult to pick any besides ronaldo and messi. their insane goalscoring ratios makes very good ones (i.e. 1 in 2) look average.

Maybe Pogba and Bale.
