At least we're in with a shout of the title and can get mildly excited about the remote possibility of catching Chelsea. If we were in say Liverpool's position then the season literally would be over.

Eh? We still have CL football to fight for.

Wouldn't even say spurs were much then better team. Don't remember tc making a Save and spurs having a sitter like costa missed near the end. Definitely edged the game but not much better. Chelsea were better team in first 15 and last 15. Enough to win the game
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd agree with this. Plenty of ineffective possession for Spurs. Chelsea have that ruthless streak that gives you confidence that they'll win the game. As a neutral, there was a sense of inevitability once Hazard and Costa came on.

A very "Spursy" result yesterday.

We've proven we can win big games in the league, where our performances and results have improved over the big teams under Poch, but we haven't managed to transition this very well away from the league to cup games. This is now the 4th time in a cup game under Poch we've gone out to the first big club we've faced.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Your record in big games in the league is nowt to shout about.

Won 4 out of 10 games against fellow top 6 sides last season and 3 out of 9 this season.

Your record is ok but not impressive.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even all the draws away are decent results compared to capitulations of the past. Haven't been beaten by Arsenal in the league yet under Poch, and even if only one of those is a win, we'd have lost one or more by a consideral margin by now under previous management.

Results and performances have improved overall.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

One away win in ten though shows it's not surprising you aren't winning anything.

To win a domestic cup or European trophy you will probably have to beat a top aide away from WHL, unless you get very lucky draws and a crap team gets to a final.

Not much improvement happening in that away record to suggest you are getting there.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe. We keep improving then away victories at bigger clubs will be more commonplace. Never easy to pick up points in these games anyway. Title winning sides most of the time have few victories at top clubs along the way.

How is our season over? We have top 4 to fight for, which, if we get, means our season would amount to get same as spurs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe Pool is the wrong example then if you're still unsure about top 4 hopes.

Let's say if we were in a position where we were guaranteed top 4 and had absolutely nothing else.

Hi Don

It comes back to two things - strength in depth which you don't really have and that winning mentality to deal with pressure

Spurs do well when there's little pressure, which is why they've been happily demolishing the bottom half of the table over the last few weeks, 7 points behind Chelsea for much of it. That's not pressure - that's chasing down the favourites - completely different

Yesterday required a winning mentality, it was a huge game and a chance to end an unwanted semi final record but despite clearly being the better team you threw it away. That third Chelsea goal was unforgivable and that was a match you should have won

I have a feeling that the closer Spurs get to Chelsea in the league, much like last year - they will start caving in under the pressure again. Last year Spurs were clearly a better footballing side than Leicester but that's not going to win you titles and that's one thing poch has to address.

If you keep your manager and squad together for the next few years it will come but I doubt that will be the case

I agree BS, I have a feeling we will close the gap even more on Chelsea but will choke when it comes to the crunch. It's what Spurs do.

People forget that we are still very much a work in progress.

Clubs like Chelsea, City, United & Arsenal have had years and massive amounts of money spent on their squads.

Chelsea had Hazard, Costa & Fabregas on their bench yesterday, which just shows the depth and quality of their squad.

We unfortunately are nowhere near that level yet, however our first choice eleven compares well with any top team in the PL, and we should also recognise that we are very much a work in progress.

Poch did make a mistake in playing Son as a wing back, however at least he tried something and I would rather fail trying than fail in not trying.

Poch joined us in the summer of 2014, in less than 2.5 years he has changed the way we play and has done this with mainly young players, with Hugo & Jan being the "oldies".

I believe that it was always the target to get where we are today in 3 years, so we are ahead of that target.

Until we get the new stadium, we cannot hope to compete financially with Chelsea, United, City or Arsenal. Even Liverpool have an edge on us with their stadium expansion completed.

We have had some exhilarating football over the past 8 years and some big disappointments. However I do believe that we will win a trophy in the next couple of years.

Yesterday was unfortunate, Chelsea just had that bit of extra quality to call on, £90m worth of talent off their bench(what Chelsea paid for them) although Hazard is probably going to go for around £85m+ on his own soon.

Yes I thought Hugo should have had the first goal covered, and Son's lunge was stupid however I do agree that we did not hit the target enough to trouble Courtois.

Poch is a good coach but he's a tad overrated as well, he's been here nearly three years and he's failed to get his team to perform in the cup competitions.

Your European campaigns have been awful, and you nearly got knocked out of the FA Cup by Wycombe as well. Think this is a major weakness from him and something he needs to improve.

The moment we started caving in as you say was when there was no pressure because Leicester had won the league. We then went on to have a mini collapse.

I take a lot more encouragement from our strong and improving league campaigns than I do disappointment from the relative failures in the cup (although one final + a semi-final in three seasons is hardly terrible). The cups are a series of one-off games in which the better side doesn't always win; there is only so much you can do to limit the effect of luck. A full league campaign provides a much fairer picture of the quality of a team.

No the moment you started caving in was against West Brom. And the Chelsea match was a complete shambles. The title was well within your grasp but you couldn't see it out and the bottling began when you were still in contention

By the time Leicester had won it the players seemed to be emotionally spent and just couldn't compete which is even more worrying

Do we really need advice from a team so far behind us playing such dull mediocre football?!

Yes you do Sizzle mate, because at least we've got the bottle to win a few trophies.

Spurs have been very good for 2 seasons. There are only 3 trophies to play for every season domestically. It's not a disaster that you haven't won one yet. I another 2 years if you still have nothing, then you can worry. Ultimately, spurs have their best team and are playing their best football for 30 plus years. Just enjoy that for now.

I don't really understand all the negativity, ok we lost yesterday but we gave the league leaders and likely champions a hell of a game ...... again. Rome wasn't built in a day!

This Spurs side is the best I've seen and it is clearly progressing every year under Poch' and Levy. When I was Kid if we were playing Liverpool or Utd it was a forgone conclusion that we would lose the game ........ often badly, these days we go into these games without fear and hoping for a good result home or away.

I have never seen Spurs win The League so to see then challenging for it in consecutive years, whilst also reaching the latter stages of the FA Cup, whilst also building an amazing new stadium, all suggest to me that the club is very much on the up.

As they told me when I joined the navy, if you haven't got a sense of humour you shouldn't have joined.

Onwards and upwards.

Whilst true, I don't think you can ignore that you came into the game in better form and they were without Costa and Hazard and Cahill. It's fine saying you gave the league leaders a good game but is that really the attitude?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Given the comparative depth of the two squads, I would say we competed well and even dominated for large parts on the game. Had Rose and Walker started the result could have gone in our favour, but if we don't have our first choice 11 on the pitch is very difficult to respond to a team that can bring on Costa, Hazard and Fabregas.

I think our first choice 11 can compete with pretty much any team in the league but it's no secret that we do not have the same depth as the other bid sides.

The 7 losing semi finals in a row is a joke but we have had rotten luck in most of those games with massive game changing decisions, we can`t do much about horrendous refereeing going against us.

We do lack a winning mentality though, which may come down to a lack of leaders on the pitch. It`s all well and good having an exciting young team but sometimes you need some older experienced heads to go the final yards.
