Of course it is a psychological approach. He knows that very well.
It won't work with all of those players he tries it on, but there are early signs that it might be with Shaw.
Let's hope so.
As long as he wins trophies, who cares?
I think a key point in what Shaw said is that he takes praise and negativity via the media type to heart.
Maybe this is a generational thing? Perhaps these younger players only fully get the message when it's all over Twitter?
Think about who Jose calls out or praises.... Shaw, Rashy, Martial... All kids that are more likely to live and breath social media.
It's a point, perhaps carrot and stick. He didn't criticise pogba publicly when he was awful for quite a few games, and he pretty much IS a Twitter account. Instead he did the opposite. Jury's out on whether it worked on martial, it's only been 1 game, but Shaw has improved a bit.
Pogba is putting in the desire Jose wants... Shaw and martial weren't.
Jose clearly states that this is not about performance, but giving their all.

Losing the ball constantly, shooting to row 7 and not tracking runners from midfield is giving his all?
Come on man
I do not agree with the criticism of players in public, it can have short term positive impact but cause long term damage.
Whilst I have my doubts about the second coming of Wayne Bridge, he did not deserve the criticism he got from the manager in public.

Whether he should or not, the fact he has and his performances have improved means that what Jose has said has worked.
On and off the pitch it's all a game that has to be played and now that Shaw is improving as is Rashford, Micky and Martial now shows that the players realise they have to buy into the philosophy if they want to stay United players under a world class coach
What performance is that Robbie? A 60 minute turnout? Then subsequently dropped against Chelsea for Darmian?
I have no issues with managers giving players both barrels in training or from the touch line but what he did to Shaw was out of order.

Well, that's why you're an office clerk and Jose is a manager. And if you haven't seen Shaws improvement in recent weeks it's bizarre. He's not going to play ever week but few are. He played 120 mins against Anderlecht so wasn't gonna play against Burnley with his injury record

You are confusing form with effort.
And effort doesn't mean running 10 miles a game.... It means doing whatever you can to stick to the manager's gameplan.

Yet Shaw thinks otherwise. Fully understands and even respects what Jose did.
I'm also not a fan of the technique, but that might be because SAF's techniques are so ingrained, which is the point of the article.
SAF also adjusted to the times though.... When kids live and breath social media.... This might be a bone fide way to reach them.
He is not the first nor the last to use these tactics. He may be the most successful, but it always burns out. Always!
It defeats our goals and our ethos.
They're pampered millionaires paid ludicrous money to play football. They're mollycoddled enough by idolising fans. They shouldn't expect the manager to hold their hand as well.. ultimately it's his job on the line if they don't perform.
In many ways, public criticism is the only defence a manager has. Tell the world which players aren't pulling their weight and then perhaps the fans focus will be on demanding that the players raise their performance, instead of stitching "Wenger Out" onto canvas, or chartering planes...
If Mourinho hadn't called out Mkhitaryan, Martial and Shaw then we'd have been slaughtering him all season for not playing them, seemingly without a reason.
I actually prefer having a manager who will come out in public and say "the little rat is more concerned with Versace man bags and FIFA than improving himself as a footballer."

But he doesn't.
In fact, his role and job environment has more in common with that of an Army officer than an office clerk.
So you believe Shaw would come out and say, his manager was out of order?
-------------
Good strawman argument.
He could easily not say anything about it, or, at the very least, not go into much detail. He could also use the people around him to make it clear he is unhappy and engineer a move.
There are only a handful of games left, he doesn;t have to blow smoke up Jose's ass if he wants out and dislikes his methods.
