The ability not to have to rely on athleticism
Obviously a mix of both, more sides play an athletic style now but without some ability they would be nowhere.
Imagine a team full of David Silva/Isco/Iniesta/Modric types, against a side full of 'athletic' players with little skill but bigger and faster.
My money would be on the midgets.
So you are saying ability Mike ?
Guess so if you could only have one of the attributes (which is ridiculous )
I asked which was more important not which would you choose if you could only have 1.
The ability to chest the ball is most important. Which is why Fellaini is the worlds best
A mixture of both is equally as important.
Then there is the style of play that a manager adopts.
For example Mourinho favours big, strong athletic types so will have a majority of these in his teams.
Pep on the other hand has mainly used the smaller, more intricate players and his team will be made up mainly of these types.
Yes Komakino, but which is more important in the modern game.
I have explained in my post that no one way is more important than the other.
It's all a matter of manager preferences.
Used to be talent. Now physique.
If you have both (not many do) you are quids in.
Modern day football managers like a good, big'un over a good small'un. Jose the more than most.
Komakino -so, do you think more managers would prefer athleticism or ability ? Its OK if your dont know.
its a spectrum really....for instance.
jose-athleticism.
wenger-skillful midgets.
Ability, by far.
The lower leagues are full of athletes without ability.
So Lambeau, wouldn't that suggest that apart from the top leagues athleticism is more important ?
Lennon
Townsend
Walcott
Lingard
Chamberlain
Do we think these players would be / have played for United, Arsenal, Spurs and co had they not had pace to burn ?
Ability > Athleticism
However the Prem is more geared towards the latter.
Could explain England on the International stage.
Spain, Germany etc are more about the quality they have in and out of possession, rather than running the 100m.
You can be a brilliant player with ability alone, not without though.

Some managers prefer athleticism, some ability.
Perhaps some professor boffin should do some study on the subject, as I'm not qualified to give you a proper answer.
Apart from the obvious advancement as the game has evolved is the modern game any different to say the 7O's and 60's regarding the make up of technical and athletic players
Komakino - I get it. Some managers want different things.
What I'm asking is, in general, do managers prefer athleticism over Ability.
Lambeau has already said most lower league sides go for athleticism.
Who would win this match?
A team of finely-tuned professional decathlon athletes
vs
A team of freestylers picked up off the beach

No, it means ability is harder to come by.
The higher you go up the ladder, the more players tend to have both of attributes, but athleticism is just that much easier to achieve through training.
It's the ability that makes the biggest difference, which is why it's more important, and also why you barely find any top level footballers who've successfully crossed over from another professional sport.
Good question Arthur.. Who would win?
