I’m still annoyed about how we set up vs Scotland. I wonder if this is Southgate admitting he only has one way to set up England and it’s to face/stifle the teams better than us.

Yeah I think that’s what he’s trying to instil into the team. The frustrating thing is that we’ve lost that quality on the counter/in transition that made us dangerous. Obviously it’s difficult to use that weapon against Scotland, but the space opened up for it against Croatia and it wasn’t there.

I don’t think it works as it doesn’t seem to have balance. The fullbacks are instructed to be safe, the 2 DMs is Safe, Mount as an attacking mid is safe.

The you are relying on 3 attackers, instructing one to go deep - thus having two runners off him; and then only one player who is naturally suited to that.

Yeah I don’t like it either. I expected him to be conservative but this is taking the piiiiss what we’ve seen so far.

We’ll have to see what happens, though. Knock out games are different, at the team may be by that point if Maguire and Henderson can prove their fitness.

But we’re going to need to exploit the phases of play in games where we are on top and get more men up to support the attack.

Though the question still remains as to whether it’ll be the right men in the team that will be tasked with doing that.
