I think Boca and River still struggle to retain players in a way that a lot of Brazilian clubs don’t seem to. I think this also helps their negotiating position, and a reason why they’ve managed to gets fees that dwarf those of the Argentine clubs.

Livorno are on a roll. Early days, but looks like they might just make it up to C this year.

Over in the Brasileirão, with only two games to go Gremio and Atl Mineiro are still in with a shot of making the Libertadores qualification stages but also in still danger of being relegated.

Criciúma and RB Bragantino who occupy the last two relegation slots, could both still qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.

Probably a question of TV deals. On the basis of population alone, I'd presume Serie A collects juicier domestic broadcasting revenues, and I'd imagine that having so many big name clubs probably makes it more appealing internationally too.

That said, MLS has apparently surpassed all of the other leagues in the Americas now in terms of revenues.

Over in the LigaMX, Cruz Azul are the only one of the top four seeds to make the semis of the Torneo Apertura playoffs, and that only by the skin of their teeth after levelling the aggregate (3-3) after beating eighth seeds Tijuana 3-0 in the return game. Cruz Azul go through by virtue of their better regular season placing.

No.2 seeds Toluca went down 0-2 at home for a 4-0 aggregate against no.7 América. This is only an upset of sorts, since América - the biggest club in Mexico and current title-holders - had picked up form in the latter part of the season after a terrible start.

No.3 Tigres went out with a whimper after a 0-0 draw against San Luis (6) in the return leg (0-3). Club legend 'Dédé' Gignac, who turns 39 this week, missed a second half penalty to get Tigres back in the tie.

Finally, Monterrey (5) came out on top of an 8-game thriller, beating no.4 Pumas 3-5, including goals from former Liga stars Lucas Ocampos and Óliver Torres.

Semifinals:
San Luis - Monterrey (5th & 8th Dec)
América - Cruz Azul (6th & 9th Dec)

I see Besiktas sacked van Bronckhorst. Their form fell off a cliff in October and November. They had a couple of Europa League wins, I guess that's why they were holding on, but it looks like the defeat to Maccabi was the final straw.

They host Fenerbahce next Saturday. Mourinho's rabble beat Gaziantep 3-1 last night to close the gap to Galatasaray down to 3 points at the weekend. The leaders were held on Sunday to a shock home draw to Yorkshire upstarts Eyupspor.

Yeah I’ve heard that’s a big reason. Think they may have some clubs with different ownership models that allow for more private investment, but I’m not certain on that.

If it's only figuratively, we may as well say he's gay wrestling in the mud, he'll like that.
