Painful that we've had to wait until now to see both him and Saúl properly involved on the edge of the box after crying out for them at the World Cup.
Still, last night was a perfect storm of sorts. There's a lot to polish still.
Yeah not had that quality from outside the box since Villa. Thing with Spain is they always try and walk it into the net.

Ok, well it was just an aside anyway, as it's a different sport.
I read up albeit briefly afterwards and it seems the rule leaves a bit of a grey area that opens it up somewhat to the officials' interpretation.
Either way, back to the game, and it seems blatantly obvious to me that DW was in no position whatsoever to play the ball. Even if he did try to back out of the challenge, he only did so when it was too late and the collision was inevitable.
Any other area of the pitch and you'd say he was late to the challenge, as he's still about a metre and a half away from the ball when DDG catches it. Honestly don't see why it should be considered otherwise here.
In fact, if the ball hadn't fallen to Welbs to tap into the net and England hadn't been a goal down deep into injury time, I seriously doubt anyone would have had any complaint whatsoever for a foul being called.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Going back to this (I thought I responded but must of forgot to hit send), I think this highlights a real (potential) oversight in VAR and football replays.
Slow-motion changes how we see the game and footballing laws will probably have to adapt to it. The video you linked and what actually happened are two totally different things. I can see this becoming an issue with the introduction of VAR.
I am aware it all happened much quicker than in the action replay.
I don't think Welbeck actually intended to go in late, but that he suddenly found himself in that position - hence his trying to back out. Doesn't change the fact that he was late to the challenge and had no chance at all of playing the ball.
As said, put the same passage of play in midfield, with De Gea towering above a late-incoming Welbeck (and heading rather than catching the ball, obviously), and you'd be calling a foul every single time, and no one would be making a fuss.
I am sure you are aware, yet comments like "Not only is it a clear obstruction; it can also be downright dangerous to tip an opponent off balance and rolling him over your back." suggest otherwise.
It depends on how you see it or interpret it I guess. I don't think Welbeck went in late and I don't think there was much momentum behind how he went in at all. I think there is also a debate to be had about is DDG 'in control' when he jumps unnecessarily high in the air throwing his whole body at a ball that was looping in the air. He probably would have got the ball over Welbeck had he stood still and just raised his arms.
So the ‘anti-Juventus’ Inter Milan lose again. This time 1-0 at home to Parma.
decent match in bilbao
hope the basques play like that when they face Farza in San Mames
Dembele scored again for them. Already matched his goals record from last season.
