Best atmosphere I've ever seen at The Emirates.

Cologne supporters showing the "corporates" how it's done.

Exactly, Chelsea were well known to have one of the largest away followings during those days. There is a well viewed you tube clip of some Police Chief or some high ranking bod admitting it. According to him only Man U or Liverpool took more. I personally would have included Spurs in that myself also.

Apart from 79 and 82, Spurs did not bring loads to the Bridge imo.

Even in 82, when they bought 14k for the Cup game, they sent back 1k standing in North Stand, which police would not allow KB to sell to Chelsea fans.

And one season, think it was 93/4, when away fans were housed East Upper, Spurs barely brought 1500.

Would say in 80s, United filled 4 pens in North Stand once or twice, usually used 3. Arsenal and West Ham 3 pens. Spurs and Liverpool 2-3 (bar 86 when they won league).

PS Did Dortmund get a lot of fans in Spurs' end?

Last fans to take the p at our place was Galatasarray around 99?

They took over half of the unfinished West Stand

CFC, I was particularly referring to outside London. Our North London Friends did also take large numbers around the Country it has to be said. They just didn't take the home ends like ours used to.

I know.

They had decent away following.

In the 80s, ours was very impressive considering how average our sides were.

Leeds Pompey and Newcastle all took good numbers away considering some of the tripe they had to endure.

But our of the 'lesser' clubs, our away following was the best, I think.

8,500 at Leeds in '83.
6,000 at Newcastle in '84
10,000 at Old Trafford in 87
10,000 at Grimsby in '84
7,000 at Portsmouth in '84

Just a few examples of what I was talking about and I was present at all of them. I think I have proved that I know what I am talking about.

Yes, I went to those.

Remember when the fence collapsed at Grimsby.

Possibly few more at Pompey: I remember buying the Standard on way to that night game, and Pompey feared we were bringing 15k. We did not bring that many, shame about the equaliser!!

Up to 15k Brighton 83
Maybe two thirds of the ground for Rangers Chelsea Boxing Day 84: possibly 15k Chelsea??

Highbury 84, whole of Clock plus other areas: 20k

Highbury 77: league Cup game: I was very young but Chelsea everywhere in 53k crowd.

Craven Cottage 84: 15k Chelsea?

Roker Park 85: 7k Chelsea

CFC, totally agree with your figures for those games as I was there also. Brighton when the crossbar got broken was particularly carnage if memory serves.

Amazingly well behaved too.

First European trip ever for the vast majority of them and not one count of shoplifting, not paying for hookers or hospitalising a home end Grandad who dared asked him to sit down.

That League Cup game at Highbury was my first away game, it seemed like Chelsea had a lot of the ground. Any idea how many were there?

Correction: Craven Cottage was 83/4 season... autumn game so 83.

I'd forgot all about those T-shirts till now.

Agree - thought they were absolutely superb.

Dortmund fans were outstanding too, made me long for that sort of bank of fans at Spurs. Don't think any were in the Spurs ends - not seen any reports of that anyway. There were probably a few scattered around but that'd be true of any game - I've been in many a home end as an away fan.

Flashy, during one of our many away bans during that period. Chelsea would often still turn up in big numbers and present the local OB with a big problem. Do you leave large numbers of disaffected individuals wandering around the town getting up to no good or do you just dump the problem in the ground? This is what the Police would often do to solve the problem.

I myself remember being on one of Hicky's coaches going up to Hull in the FA Cup in '82 and we all ended up in their end because some mush had gone up there during the week and posing as a local got about 160 tickets from Hull directly.

I was at Bolton in '82 too which was one where Brian Moore commented about the FA taking further action against the Club for about 1,000 of us being in there.

After that Chelsea fans bought T-shirts in droves saying "You can't ban the Chelsea fan" That is where JFDI's reference point came from.

Great days 69, of all the away days back then my least favourite was QPR. I used to love the turning up at places like Hereford, Oldham, Plymouth.

Forest and Wednesday were always particular favourites of mine.

QPR though was like a home game where we'd just rock up take virtually the whole ground over, may as well have been a home game!
