I wouldn't take much notice of these nominations.
I think Kyle Walker Peters has been nominated and he's only played one PL game in his life
It's normally viewed as a curse as the winner usually fails spectacularly in their career
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just had a wee look. Lots of top class winners. Do t see too many failed careers there
Joe Gomez and Reece Oxford are on the list despite hardly even playing in 2017. Seems a bit of a crap list.
Rashford is the English player that has done anything at senior level.
At the moment it's still potential and hype. If when they reach the age of 23/24 and have kicked on, and not become just another Ox, we'll know it's justified.

"The last 3 years" - so 3 players still very young.
Quite a few world cup winners, champions league winners, European Championship winners in there.
Even the fat kid who played for United won the Copa America, Champions League and a few PLs.

The last 3 years:-
Renato Sanchez - flopped at Bayern, now at Swansea
Anthony Martial - Manchester United benchwarmer
Raheem Sterling - Enuff said
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bit early to say they've failed spectacularly ffs
Always find this award to be bloated. Walker-Peters amongst others nominated essentially for 6 games in the summer? Just cut the initial nominations to 16 to 20 players - it's a smaller pool to choose from after all - and then go from there.

Everything?
Thing is, even without reducing the numbers, surely they could have found players more worthy than some on the list? Gomez, Oxford and Walker-Peters have played what ten games between them in 2017?

Que?
Is it really judged on performance though?
What I mean is, is it an an award for 'best young player this year', or is it just an award for 'player identified as having most potential'
I'm don't know which, but if it's the latter then it would explain why how many games they have played isn't really relevant.
Mbappe is surely a shoo-in to win it anyway.
It's for the most impressive player that year.
It's based on performance despite some of them hardly playing any games to be judged on. For example Walker-Peters probably played 6 tournament games and 4 friendlies for the U20 side this year and made his club debut 6 weeks ago. Would be on par with Neuer should he make the senior shortlist this year despite being injured since April and apparently being out for the rest of the year.
Definitely some of the names included are ludicrous then
As you say, they really should make it a shorter list, then they won't be desperately trying to find names to put on it.
Looking up on it and it appears that there's a flaw in the voting system itself also. 12 different newspapers vote and have to vote for five different players each, with points allocated for the best to the worst - 10, 7, 5, 2 and 1.
The Times must have run out of players to nominate. Surprising Tom Davies wasn't nominated ahead of the other English lads given he actually played.

Maybe if he had been a star performer during the summer?
But he has been okay, nothing spectacular. DCL, Solanke etc all win over the summer
I just googled the award itself, wanted to refresh my memory in regards to previous winners and found this on Wiki:
"All nominees must be under the age of 21 and play in a European nations top tier"
So by default, all those with limited or no senior domestic appearances shouldn't have been nominated then? U23 football and below clearly isn't top tier.
I don't really see a problem with the cut off point for age. It's just to acknowledge youngsters. After the age of 21 players tend to be more established and as a result I don't think they need to be considered for an award like this.
All just raw talent, most have proved nothing on the big stage yet, at club or senior international level. The only one who has is Rashford, but the rest are all promising talents, nothing more to be said. I'm sure there have been many a English player to make this list before and just drop into PL/lower level mediocrity.

It's not the age I'm referring to, it's the lack of people actually playing at the top level! Being registered for a top level club but playing in their youth or B team is essentially playing in a lower league thus not meeting the qualifying criteria
I see.
There criteria is clearly a bit flimsy. Bentancur got nominated after three games in Europe.
