I think it's mainly down to the physical presence.
It's not rocket science.... Regardless of what happened, last season, something is currently happening in training, on the pitch and in the tactics room that makes Jose believe that Matic/Fellaini is the best option, while Pogba is out.
As of now, it's working out pretty well... We are winning games and not conceding... I imagine Jose is willing to sacrifice a bit of entertainment while Pogba is out (though probably scratches his head at the tears, considering the recent 4-0s, 4-1s etc).
Herrera's a decent player, very good, at times... But let's not act like it is Xavi being dropped for Fellaini.

This. Herrera's good, but we have no idea about training, his personal life tactics etc.
He'll get his chances but there could be dozens of reasons as to why he didn't play. Jose will look at the game in so much more depth and so many more levels that 90% of fans that just think:
"herrera's better than Fellaini, therefore he must play"
Look at the EUFA cup final game where fellaini started and was immaculate, his ability to go long and take the ball down was the main reason we won that match, by far. Pre game people probably complained about the team sheet.
He's the manager, he'll get 99% of things right and we won. There's nothing to see here

👏
What's up with Herrera is that Fellaini has taken his chances when he's played.
We should be happy we have a decent squad for the first time in ages where we are winning games but have players like Smalling, Martial, Herrera and Blind on the bench
We’re in the middle of 7 games in 21 days so they’ll all play. IF we come out the other side with a decent return or points, does it really matter what order the players are in?
Rumour has it Herrera showed a coach around from Celts Vigo prior to our match and Jose wasn't happy at all. Could have been privy to information about us for the game etc so definitely not an advisable thing to do without the clubs permission.
It's ridiculous that Fellaini is playing so much ahead of him though. Fellaini has his strengths as an attacking mid but as a out and out CM it's not even close. Herrera is just several levels better.
You don't really want to cross Jose either tbh. Hes not one to let things go. All this public lauding of Fellaini he's done probably is also a message to Herrera.
It's obvious why, not that I agree with the decision.
Herrera hasn't been very good at all this season though.
Herrera will likely start in the CL this week, Fellaini isn't in the squad, injured at the weekend.
The tackle from Shane Long on Fellaini was quite bad apparently? Couldn't watch the game, and there didn't seem to be any mention of it on TV or the papers
Fellaini reacted quite badly so it looked a bit bad
Interesting to see if Herrera takes his chance
Shane Long trod on his achilles

It couldn't have been that bad, he played on for another 70 minutes or so.
One of those where he just let Fellaini know he was there, something Fellaini likes to do himself.
Herrera and Fellaini are completely different types of players who will be used by Jose as the situation dictates given how he wants us to set up in different games against different opposition.
It's that simple really.

Good; that's that settled then
On a (completely) different note, anyone still laughing at Smalling taking out Jones again at the weekend?
That's one way to try to get your place in the side back I suppose, Mike.
The thing is we have rightly gone 4-2-3-1 in most games and Pogba and Matic are superior midfielders to Ander.
Fellaini has taken his opportunities better than Herrera this season so no one can really have any complaints that he played when Pogba got injured.
Fellaini is now injured also so Herrera has his chance to impress.

so you are saying Jose doesn't know what a good midfielder is?
.................
Not if he thinks Fellaini is better there than Herrera.
Managers are not always right, as an Arsenal fan should be well aware of by now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
where are you in the league?
but man united fans think they know better than their manager
--------------------------
I find your viewpoint moronic to be perfectly honest. Just because Jose decides to utilise Fellaini to get a result does not mean that there aren't other (more aesthetically pleasing) routes to achieving the same result.

So why do folks complain so much about it most weeks before a ball is kicked?
...............
I will always complain when Fellaini starts games in the midfield. He isn't any good as a midfield player.
