If he fails to win any of the big prizes this season then he's been a flop so far, and given the form of United and other teams in the CL, it's a big possibility.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure I agree with that. Chelsea, United and City are all pretty level, as long as all show progression, I wouldn't class it as a flop as such. If one of those drops off from a title race, then absolutely.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But he didn't win anything last season. To go 2 seasons without winning a PL at City is a sackable offence according to your hierarchy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No it isn't. They've only sacked Mancini and Hughes. Pellegrini, they chose not to activate the extension.

Pellegrini would be sacked if he came in last season, like Pep did, and failed to win any of the big prizes for 2 seasons in a row, let's be honest. Pep may survive such a thing based on his name and rep I guess.
"Pellegrini, they chose not to activate the extension."
Surely semantics!
Not activating an extension would imply that they deemed his performance as not good enough.
Guardiola probably gets more leniency based on his reputation, but two seasons without a trophy would be quite bad for City.
That said, I don't think that will be the case.
No, had Guardiola not signed, they would have kept Pellegrini for another season. That's exactly what the deal was with his extension.
If we finish second in the PL and get far in the CL, then he won't be at risk, particularly if we keep playing the football we are at the minute. I don't think he would be happy and would personally consider it an underachievement if he didn't win a trophy this season. I'm just saying that I think Chelsea and United are both strong enough to win the title themselves without the other two requiring a flop as such.
It may well come down to some things out of the managers control, such as injuries to key players at particular times. Were Chelsea to lose Hazard as well as Morata for example, or if we lost Jesus and Aguero. I do think it will come down to fine margins.
I do agree that two seasons in a row with no silverware for a club with nearly infinite finances and a manager of Pep's standing is not good enough and should really have no other outcome than the sack.
The same with all the top clubs at the moment with the exception of Wenger and Poch.
A Chelsea manager is always under pressure no matter what the previous season brought and Mourinho has given himself some time with his silverware last season. But make no mistake Jose will be under immense pressure should he win nothing this year.
meltonblue (U10617)
Ah I see, fair enough.
I agree he won't be at risk, but I think that's more to do with who he is.
It shouldn't really. Pep said himself last season that he wouldn't last at clubs like Barca and Bayern had his side oerfirmed like it did last season

You can dress it up with fine margins and bad luck if you like, but it's still a flop for a manager of the calibre of Pep and the expenditure he's had to go 2 seasons without a major title. That's what City brought him in for. The previous 2 managers managed it in their first 2 full seasons.
Content,
I would caveat that with he took over with us a long way away from those clubs, particularly in terms of personnel in certain positions. We were imbalanced last year. He can absolutely be judged more this year (although I think we did need another cm really).
It's why I still (just) fancy Chelsea this season.

In the black and white nature of football management nowadays, I would agree. I'm only arguing my opinion on it, not what the majority of fans would think.
The first team were in worse shape when Pellegrini left in 2016 compared to when he took over in 2013, which is basically what is being said - if Guardiola takes the team backwards over his tenure then you could fairly say he was a "flop" at City, but so far the signs are looking like anything but that.
Yeah, you never know. I am not hopeful. Difficult to retain the title, especially when there are at least strong six teams challanging for the title in the epl.
That said Man City is expectef to win the league this season.

Which I find slightly odd, given that Chelsea have improved too, as have United. Mourinho and Guardiola both took over teams with identical points and have both invested well.
I get that it could be argued we are slight favourites, expected makes it sounds like a given though, which does a disservice to United and Chelsea, and I'm not convinced of the motive.

Well you could say the same for LVG at Man United and that didn't save him. They were in a better place when he left than when he arrived.
Because Pep is deemed one of the best managers around it may well save him, as there aren't many around you would consider better. If there was and he was available it'd be different.

I agree that there are 6 times fighting for the title each year in the Prem as there are in the Scotch Prem. Celtic, Aberdeen, Rangers, St Johnstone, Hearts and Partick Thistle all finished in the top 6 last season. 6th is only 5 places below top, which is the same as in England so Partick were challenging for the title. You may say that Partick Thistle rarely win the league as much as Liverpool do these days, but etc.
No he's not a fraud but he never was. His record is incredible. He just didn't have a great first season.
I'll let you in on a little secret though - there will always be opposition fans who berate anyone you sign. You could sign Messi and there'd be some clown claiming he was over the hill and couldn't do it in the EPL. I really wouldn't take it personally.
People said this would be his toughest job and they were correct, he’s started to get the team he wanted playing his way.
The mistakes he made last season have been much discussed and he’s gone a way to correct them.
The teams improved but so have the likes of Chelsea and spurs, there’s stronger competition now than ever.
Anyone calling pep a fraud is an idiot.
