Is Guardiola still a fraud?

It depends what the remit is he's been given really. if he's been told to prioritise winning as much as possible for a couple of years, then I wouldn't use youngsters much either (bear in mind we have a pretty young squad now anyway).

I think it will be a year or two before we really get the calibre of youth players he is after that are capable of it though, it really is on the player and whether they are at the appropriate level or not. I think Foden will get a few games this year.

Using the pitiful state of the Premier League as a benchmark is really not the point.

I've always regarded Guardiola as a coach that is able to work with youth and integrate players into the first team, combining them with big money signings.

If he isn't going to do that at City then I'll regard it as a disappointment.

I can't wait for the City v Spurs game in December.

City wiped the floor with us at the Etihad in the 2-2 game, Pep outdid Poch there, but Poch had the better of the WHL game.

Hopefully Rose will be fit and ready to roll by then, against Walker. Aurier will hopefully have settled too and Mendy will be back to resume their Ligue 1 rivalry.

Good battles across the pitch and the coaches

Of course, but are we really going to believe that you don't have any players in the youth set up who would be as capable as some of your 'lesser' squad members?

It's not as if he inherited a diabolical youth set up.

Time will tell - it's early days, but 2 to 3 years with no development on this front would be a disappointment for me.

Sometimes you have to take a gamble with youth. Nobody would have told you from United's academy that Rashford was ready to make the impact he did and has.

I'm agreeing with you winston, but right now, no I don't think we do, at least not to be starters. Guardiola has always said he will play any player based on merit. At the minute, he isn't going to play Foden if he has De Bruyne, Gundogan, Silva and Silva to choose from, aside from in the league cup or if we have an injury crisis. When Silva either moves on or retires, then the hope is that Foden is ready to take a first team slot full time, ditto with some of the other positions.

A fair few would have to be fair and he's a prime example of someone that had an opportunity and took it. It still took a few things to happen for him to have that opportunity.

Yes, but clearly there are other positions on the pitch where you're not as strong.

Well, you weren't as strong before you splashed the cash!

posted on 4/10/17

True, but we didn't have any youth players ready in those positions either (at least, not unless expectations were revised downwards)

Well, being 'ready' is subjective.

As discussed above - Rashford was thrown in because of injury problems - probably wouldn't have been otherwise.

The top clubs in England have lost their bottle when it comes to giving youth a try.

It is and also a matter of circumstance, as you say

Given the money the cl brings nowadays and the pressure on managers to deliver short term results as a consequence (Rashford has fared better than his manager did for example), I can see why they don't prioritise youth. I have long argued about this though and that I don't like the overall direction, it's the nature of modern day football.

I don't really agree.

As a country, we've convinced ourselves that 'the kids' are a big gamble.

Well, I'd argue that it's no more of a gamble than bringing in players who have never played in the Premier League from all over the world - typically who have played at a level below the best clubs across Europe.

I think the big clubs attitude to youngsters is nothing short of a disgrace, frankly.

I'm pretty sure you are agreeing then Winston aren't you, as I said I wasn't happy with the approach of the big clubs either?

posted on 4/10/17

meltonblue (U10617)

Well no, because I don't see why they do it.

posted on 4/10/17

Ah ok.

I agree with that outside of the big clubs as the standard of player they are bringing in is less. Not sure I agree about the big clubs though, I can see why they do it, I just don't like it.

I reckon we could both reel off a fair few names from the top 5-6 clubs that could fit into that category.
