Put the environmental stuff to the side
Its a financial mistake
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have a young child and amenities are not close then you need a car.
Otherwise a car is something that sits in one place for 95% of the time, depreciates, and costs money whether you use it or not.
Total total waste.
Fractional ownership is the way forward for a large amount of people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There's a car sharing(?) company here. Communauto. Various plans, including a 0$ membership. With that you can get a hybrids for $50 a day with100km free. They're parked all over the city.

Can get behind that, theres Enterprise car club in the UK. Sixt has one in europe that’s like 20p per minute or something..
Perfect if you’ve gone shopping and need to get a load of gear home.

"I think it has been shown that buying an old car is better for the environment than a new green car."
By an absolute mile.
About 50% of the lifetime emissions associated with a vehicle run until it falls to pieces are in the raw material extraction and processing of those materials, manufacturing of parts, assembly of the vehicle, and shipping the end product to the customer.
The best thing you can do for the environment as a driver is to find an old banger nobody else wants to drive, look after it as best you can, and run it absolutely into the ground. Then repeat. The emissions the vehicle is creating are completely irrelevant at that point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the short term maybe, but I'm not sure that argument would hold up in the long term. This would rely on there being an infinite supply of 'old bangers' for everyone to buy. Which would likely mean the continued production of diesel engined cars to keep regenerating the used car market.
In the long term, a green future for cars in reliant on people buying new electric cars. Otherwise we just continue down the route we have been heading down.

Also, in London 'old bangers' are being taxed extra with something called ULEZ. I think we are trying to gravitate away from that particular car.

Unfortunately the latest hospital admissions in Gauteng province in SA are not encouraging. Previous week has been updated again - now @ 788 admissions, more than double previous week. This week - still v incomplete - is already showing higher numbers.
Key is vax status & age. https://t.co/owTMKdIeTO
I live 4 miles from Heathrow, where I work and if I were to opt for public transport to get there it would take roughly 90 mins with the traffic and two buses to get to work. In a car it's just so much easier. If I'm on a early shift I won't even be able to get there by public transport since the buses don't start until 5:30am
I'm gonna try to use my car less now I'm moving into my flat with my wife in a few days time though, if I work mid shifts I'm gonna try and use the bus if possible just to save on the fuel costs.

Enjoy the new lecky Range Rover, and hope all goes well in a few weeks with the wee lady arriving.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It feels genuinely weird sitting behind the wheel of a nice car. I don’t know if it is the remanents of the catholic guilt even though I’m pottering around using the electric functionality full time being good to the environment, just feels like I shouldn’t be in a decent car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Enjoy your car by all means, but let's not pretend it was good for the environment buying a new car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Driving a hybrid/electric better for environment than driving a petrol car no? Guess it depends on lifecycle of the car and how long I intend to have it (plus impact of building a new one) versus maintaining high CO2 output old car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Never feel guilty mate...become an iron rod, lol.
You worked for the car so enjoy, as we are only here a while, and young even less than you think.
Only problem is lack of uk charge points, having about 22k and needing over 200k charge points, but if you charge at the house, sorted...I was trimming a girls bush and she had a wee E car charging in front of house and the range was 100 miles only, so that sucks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nice quick change of subject there, old chap.

Surprised you saw that, haha.
Wife was out wi mates few weeks back and I was driving them home, all merry, and one said she needed her bush trimmed and as I was gardening, asked could I do it, so I jumped at the chance.
It was so big she could not see properly to reverse out of her drive, and she nearly ran over a dog....another growler, so to speak.
Cut it way back and even brushed up afterwards, so she can see clearly now.
Jobs a good un.

Could you give us the back-story on this girl and her newly-trimmed bush?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Vajazzle next?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With hedge cutters and a steady hand, mate.

I just know too many people that have spent like a 1/3rd of their yearly income on a car purchase. Its mental and its a common occurrence
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It is a petrolhead thing for some and at the same time for the family to get about, especially during covid, as I have been driving wife, daughter and mates to work, school, everywhere, and I know this is then bad for the planet.
Love of cars and bikes is in tje blood and like foitball to some of us, a passion....or pain in the erse.

Put the environmental stuff to the side
Its a financial mistake
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It all depends on circumstances. Where we are the travel infrastructure isn’t great (east Neuk of Fife) so it would be a struggle, especially with a wee one, without a car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You only have a wee one.
Thoughts n prayers, pal.
