Little Rishi will have to get some new patter, his Corbyn dribblings won't wash with anyone but the brainwashed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is exactly why Starmer has taken the stance. It appears “you supported Corbyn” is the only retort the wee man has. It was painfully weak in any case but this nullifies it completely IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
100% this is why he's done it. It sticks in the craw though, if Labour are meant to be the broad church it claims to be then there has to be a place for Corbyn.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's not a broad church anymore.
It's been captured by blairites, and Corbyn didn't have enough time to move it back to the centre left.
It's an absolute parody of what a "Labour" party should be, needs renaming.

You can't persue policies relevent to the 1930's when everyone is offered a place at university and Social Housing is rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
Blairism is the only feasible alternative to the present $hitshow though it probably needs a few tweaks.

Our culture, our race, our beliefs just don't match up to traditional socialism. If it did, this government would never have lasted this long. Corbyn proved it without doubt what was already know.
Labour need to win Tory voters over and that will never happen with traditional left win policies.
Maybe, when my generation has passed it might, but for now, no chance.

Wales certainly do, but thas always been the case. Scotland? What with the SNP driving a nationalist cause, I find their political culture unclear
Scottish council tax payers are getting the best deal in Britain, paying on average £590 a year less than they would in Tory-run England, and £423 less than in Labour-run Wales.
Meanwhile, the average increase in council tax, for 2022/23, is smaller in Scotland (3%) than it is in England (3.5%).
π· Scottish taxpayers get the best deal in the UK.
π€ Council tax bills are lower in all bands, and people in Band D pay £590 less than in England.
We’ve also introduced a fairer income tax system – so that those with the broadest shoulders pay a bit more, while the majority of Scots pay less.
Around 55% of taxpayers pay less income tax in Scotland than they would elsewhere in the UK.
Even the Tory Scottish Secretary Alister Jack admitted it.
Under the SNP government, in every corner of Scotland, people benefit from many things that are not available to people south of the border.
Here are just some examples.
Free tuition
Free prescriptions
Free bus travel for under-22s
Free personal care to all who need it
Expanded free early learning and childcare to 1,140 hours
Free sanitary products
Expanded free school meals

And genuine question from someone ignorant of Scottish politics and independent economic strength, debt, etc
Would those schemes still be affordable if Scotland became independent ?
I've no idea.
I only put them up as a way of reply to question of political culture. The budgets that the devolved Parly has control over seem to be aimed at improving the lot of the Scottish people, which is a political choice.

I think at least a good part of the answer to the question is: “If the Scottish people decide collectively that they want to pay for them.”
All of the things you’ve listed could be done in England, comfortably. But the English people choose to elect politicians who aren’t interested in implementing a tax regime capable of properly funding public services and social programs.
The governments of much poorer countries than the UK offer social programs that look much more like those enjoyed by the Scots than those enjoyed by the English.
