I'm not opposed to capital punishment for political leaders responsible for mass atrocities and murder, like the Nuremberg executions.

As keeping fascists alive poses extreme dangers for the rest of society.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess there is a difference if you are faced with a Hitler, Pol Pot, Idi Amin type figure.

However, such a trial actually gives them a platform to spread their message again. Particularly if they are using populist rhetoric. The trial of Hitler in 1931 after the beer hall putsch for example, actually increased his popularity despite being found guilty of treason. It actually helped him win support to obtain power through legal methods.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What's funny?

you guess

Anyways have a good day I'm off out in the sun
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sure. My guess is that you don't know and you are therefore disappearing to save face.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Save face on what, I don't care that much about it but stand by what I said, that if we're putting down repeat pedo's and serial killers I wouldn't bat an eyelid

You have a different opinion, good for you.

Enjoy your day.

So you don't know what was funny? Thanks for confirming.

I would argue the complete opposite, keeping these people alive poses more risks to society in spreading this ideology. As seen by the Germans who fled to South America after 1945, who sought to build their political project over there. In fact, Hitler’s light sentencing kind of proves the point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think he only served 9 months. I would argue that a stronger sentence with restrictions on coverage of their incarceration would mitigate any risks. I think that in the current climate; a huge trial with coverage and a death sentence could actually provide the risk of the person becoming a martyr to some parts of society that follow them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I strongly disagree with this, as I do not really see how the Nuremberg executions made martyrs out of them. Maybe, to only a very small subsection of the population. Considering that in the aftermath of the second world war, Nazzis still held high ranking positions in society and government – them being alive increases the influence they might have within government. Likewise, it is important that the severity of their crimes is recognised as distinct, as crimes against humanity and genocide. Giving them prison sentences like general criminals, reduces the severity of the evil they perpetuated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The time of the Nuremberg trials was very different to now. Imagine a Trump like figure in one of those positions and how quickly misinformation now travels.

If the Nuremburg trials were held today with a figure who had that sort of influence, I could easily see it opposite effect to the one you think it will have.

I don't think there is a one size fits all answer if we are ever in such a situation again. I guess we have to hope we never are.

New: looks like Keir Starmer is 'doing a Johnson' as it is technically known and dodging the BBC's invite for a long-form interview. Sunak and five other leaders are doing it.

Hope they empty chair him
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Probably the right decision to be honest. Keep giving Rishi enough rope to hang himself and avoid anything that might cause a slip up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really he needs to be front and centre a leader in waiting, and tbh he can afford a slip up.

Bojo was an embarrassment, emulating anything he did ain't a good thing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bet you still voted for him though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I voted Green so NO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah. The pro capital punishment guy voted Green.

Sunak - don't politicize my leaving D-day remembrance early during a GE campaign.

He's not very bright.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He also said the itinerary had been planned for 6 weeks before the GE was even announced.

Sums him up he thinks people think the problem is it was a GE

Parents earning six-figure salaries could be able to keep some or all of their child benefit payments, under proposals put forward by the Conservatives.

I suppose kids with wealthy parents demand more exppensive toys.

Turning it into a measure by household as opposed on individual earners would be a good start. Currently 1 person earning 50k one earning 0k get no child benefit, 2 parents both earning 49k do. It’s a nonsense.
