You do understand the implications of them doing this don’t you?

Let’s all be honest and say that the taxation of large estates that the owners bought with no intention of farming was a legitimate target and the loophole accordingly closed.

What’s transpired is the “capture” of 60% of our food production from the small farms that should never have been penalised like this and that was unintentional. Furthermore, the taxation raised is minimal in the grand scheme of things and the government numbers simply do not add up to the same as more experienced groups and other official figures.

That at least should be sensibly discussed to reach a common starting point and from there a better reflection of the level of assets assessed from where to start taxation. Instead of that we are getting hard nosed ignoring and a self destructive attitude of doubling down from the government who could easily say they need further study on cause and effect.

Is anyone genuinely happy to see this stand off and not at least recognise the longer term harm it will do.

Maybe if more people understood the rigours and legislation around small farming, they might be better placed to comment although that would mean acknowledging that the measures are misjudged.
